Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZDi

Engine: 1.3L Multiget diesel

Power: 89BHP

Torque: 250N-m

Transmission: 5Speed Manual

Drivetrain: FWD

Fuel Tank: 45L

About: The History and Heritage

Suzuki Brezza came in as a compact iteration to worldwide success as an SUV but not in India. India is where the Vitara saw the worst downside in sales. And to keep the brand image up, to venture into a new segment, Suzuki Brezza was Maruti Suzuki’s shot in the dark. And it did well. Well enough to the common eye. But it has its lows, let’s what all.

Exterior Styling: How much of an SUV is it?

With a ground clearance of about 195mm ( Unloaded) The Brezza comes sure of a compack SUV. To keep in mind, this is the best in class figure. Coming to the styling, with the Baleno, Swift 2018 and Brezza what the firm adopted is the Y2K design language. This was first showcased in 2014 Indian Auto Expo. This language works well for all segments as it is that much appealing. A tall body, high ground clearance, boxy frame all combined with swoopy lines of character. With the DRLs and the light setup, the Brezza looks that much special.

Score: 7.6/10

Interior Styling: Spacious. But Premium Enough?

The Brezza for being a boxy body and a tall frame has loads of legroom which suits for occupants over 6 feet. It’s roomy, the window line is nice and low letting a lot of light in. The dash seems to be very well setup too. However, the seats let the whole thing down. They just are flimsy and not very well put together. This makes for a really unhappy drive. Infact on one of my tests, the seat distance adjust kept rattling the 4 day old Suzuki Brezza. That sets off many. It just doesn’t feel very well put together.

Score: 5.7/10

Engine and Performance: The One Engine Works For All Segments strategy.

Off lately, Maruti Suzuki has been adapting a new strategy. It develops an engine ( In this case, sourced from Fiat) and uses it across its range of cars. Now this might seem well for lighter cars like Swift or the Dzire but the larger vehicles take a shot. Brezza lacks of what is undoubtedly an underpowered engine. And that’s all it has in this category. This makes the heavier Brezza run on a weak heart of 1.3L diesel unit. What’s even worse? It doesn’t come with the SHVS. This is the way down in the engine section.

Score: 6.7/10

Service and Maintenance: The Brand Value Pays Off.

Service and Maintenance of any Suzuki vehicle is comparitively lower than any competitor. And it’s no different here. The labour costs are the lowest and the engine is frugal. Parts and replacements come in no time and are not too expensive. The dealers do try to rip you off of your money. To keep a check on that.

Score: 8/10

The Verdict: Has Suzuki Won in This Segment?

This question needs to be analyzed thuroughly as it means a lot. On inspection and comparisions, it seems the brand has done good. But the winner? It is not. For a perfect value for money, Mahindra and Ford have better alternatives. Keeping in mind Ford’s new manufacturing unit, cut the service costs by over 64% . And addition of high performance engines counts a lot. Now with all this going on, Brezza is up for a serious update. Mechanically and Aesthetically.

Overall Score: 7.2/10
