It begins with a question..Who was T. E. Lawrence?and did he really deserve a place, a special one, in British History? My question is, did his life really was so exciting ans adventerous that a movie was made on it and it went on to become one of the greatest movie ever made, with due credits to director for his effort. The rest of the movie, more than 3 hrs of it, speaks out for all answers and when it ends leaving no doubt in one's mind that Lawrence indeed deserved it all. It also makes it sure that whoever watches it never forget the name 'Lawrence of Arabia' .. ever again.

Something About the Story : LOA is about the true life odyessy of T E Lawrence's, a british officer, journey to the middle east during the times of WW1. Assigned to Arabia, Lawrence soons makes an impression both on Arabian Prince Faisal and the British Forces. He won for them an improtant region with Turkish Garrisin, Aqaba, which was supposed to be unconquererable, with the help of Sherif Ali(Prince's Man) and Auda (Tribal Leader). He then courageously united the different warring tribes of Arabia into a strong Guerrila front and lead them to victories after victories. He finally lead them, after many treachorous desert battles, to the Damascus, the capital city, where they defeated the Turks and ended the rule of Turkish Empire on Arab.

Behind the Screen Magicians : The best aspects of the movie are its direction, locations and cinemtograpy.

Director David Lean (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago) has done an excellent job. He has covered the story so well and in such a detailed way, but at the same time he also made it sure that it never loose the basic plot. He has covered the Desert so well and never let it look like some documentry on Desert life. but can surely call desert shootas one of the strong point of the movie.

Cinematography is just spectacular. Even mirage effect is there to see, a real one, no special effect.

Music by Maurice Jarre is wonderful and strong like an epic should have. It couldn't have been better. Screenpaly by Robert Bolt and Micheal Wilson is good too, though half of the movie runs in silence with only music in the backgroud. Dailouges are put whereever neccessary and appropriate. Silence can be interpreted as the language of Desert. Very beautifully done.

On Screen Legends : Peter'O Toole as Lawrence has done an excellent job. Haven't seen him before in any movie, that in a way helped me to watch him as Lawrence himself. He has acted it so well, giving it proper feel. He looks like our own Raj Kapoor, clean shaven one, even have acted like him too.

Anthony Quinn and Omar Sharif are other actors who have got bulk of screen presence and they have done their parts pretty well.

Our own I S Johar is also thee but only for a scene or two and that too are ignorable.

Some Words of Wisdom :

"There's nothing further here for a warrior.

We drive bargains. Old men's work.

Young men make wars, and the virtues of war are the virtues of young men.

Courage and Hope for the Future.

Then Old men make the peace and the vices of peace are the vices of old men.

Mistrust and Caution." By Prince Faisal in the end of the movie.

Some Achievements : LOA won 7 Oscars which includes (Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Music, Cinematography, Sound and Film Editing). It also got nominations for both Peter and Omar sheriff in the catogory of Actor and Supp. Actor respectively.

Other than Oscars it won numerous other awards and is ranked at #5 in all time 100 great movies by AFI.

What Else to Look For : When you watch it on DVD, the latest copy with restored and reconstructed version, dont forget to look for the sprecial features like Romance od Arabia, In Search of Lawrence and Even the Camels are a Cast. Then you will get to know the really hardhip and dangers that the whole unit has to go thru to shoot it exactly at the same locations, where it had exactly happened duirng WW1. Even the rail road where they picturised the attack on turkish train, is real one, fully restored though to look fresh. Even the camles used in the movie are according to the characters they have to keep on their back, it was not done just about anyway.

As far as rating is concerned, some movies and books are above rating and reviews, LOA is one of them. I will better call this as an experience, a spectacular one. The experience of a an important chapter of WW1 history; experience of Desert, both beautiful and dangerous, like never before; the experience of the times and life of T. E. Lawrence, which I am sure, I am never gonna forget now ..ever.
