Carlos told me that he can tell me the story of “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” before the movie got released. What rubbish?  Yet he tried narrating the story like this….

Ram Shashtri(AK Hangal), an upper caste Hindu Brahmin, lives in a small village in India but has a very large family, including his wife, Savitri(Nirupa Roy), five daughters and three sons. The eldest is Shalini(Mumtaz), who falls in love with Ashok Rao(Rajesh Khanna). Ashok incidentaly dies. As Ram is unable to continue working, Shalini chooses to earn somehow_ and gets the family back on its feet. She sends plenty of money so that her father doesn’t have to work and her siblings can get an education. Cynicism here and .

I shouted at Carlos! Bullshit . this is “K Balachander’s(1977) Aaina”.  You are going to watch the remake only. responded Carlos

Well, Aditya Chpra has to respond if it is a remake. I know many of us have not seen Aaina or not likely to watch it also. It did not matter either to me when I decided to be among “First day first show” goers. There are many classic remakes making sense to suite the genre and I enjoyed many of them.

Storyline is(not exactly same as aaina obviously) and even if it is same I have variety of reasons to go for it…. One- It is under YashRaj Films banner and I simply love their movies. Two- Pradeep Sarkar’s credibility as the director of “Parineeta”(also visual director of “Eklavya” and  assistant director of “Mission Kashmir”) . Three-Shantanu Moitra’s Music(famous for his scores in Eklavya, Khoya Khoya Chand, Lage Raho Munna Bhai) . Four-Aditya Chopra’s Story with Swanad Kirkire’s Lyrics and Five- Presence of quality stars of Indian Cinema(Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek Bachhan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Kunal Kapur, Anupam Kher etc. etc.)

Okey!  The Troika of Sarkar-Moitra-Chopra did not disappoint me this time either.

It is the story of a small town girl's struggle to help her family live a life. Without any degree or modern traits of elegance one has the choice of selling herself, when nothing else is visible. On the plot although there is nothing drastically new, the flow was going well till last moment where suddenly the director comes with an unpractical happy ending( A typical movie critic would not appreciate it). Since I had mentioned about “Aaina” let me also mention that you can never draw a parallel between two movies. With dearth in original storyline, all the new movies can possibly have similarity with a classic, so be it…. Giving a thought on the storyline one is expected to shed tears in the Cinema hall and waste 2 to 3 quality hours in a Multiplex. The movie on the contrary(& in line with the Yash Raj banner) is able to entertain the mob completely without any lacuna. Direction is without any flaw. In a critic’s view this movie may not live up to the height of the Filmfare best direction “Parineeta” just because the expectations are too huge. Many reviews have reflected that.

In acting department everyone is best. Konkana Sen Sharma as chutki is best with her natural expressions. Even as the worst critic I will not find fault with any one of the finest stars in acting department. Rani as the central character is amazing, Jaya Bachhan looks eligant and absolute fit for the role. Both Abhishek and Kunal Kapoor look absolute charming and fit the bill perfectly. One tend to be really emotional when the two sisters share their feeling(when konkana knows everything just after the intermission). Cool scenes also amuse the audience at Konkana’s first trainee day. My feeling is both Saif Ali Khan and VIdya Balan missed something if they missed the characters of Abhishek Bachan and Konkana. Abhshek Bachhan is great with his 20 minute appearance.  Although Hema Malini is good at her small appearance, I was slightly puzzled if the character was there just to draw a simile to whole drama.

Music is good if not the best of the year. Shantanu Moitra-Swanand Kirkire duo impressed me once again with the kind of Music & Lyrics, with all 5 tracks(except the titile song). In the title track though Shubha Mudgal and Meeta Vashist are terrific.   Sunidhi Chouhan   and Shreya Ghoshal(Kirkire and Pranab Biswas alongside) are excellent in “Hum to aise hain”. Other Tracks “Kaachi kaliyan”, “Ehi thaiyaa Motiya(Rekha Bhardwaj)” and “Zara Gungunalein chalo”  are decent numbers. Music is for every genre and perfectly made for the scenes. Hum to aise hain bhaaya rocks.

While, the plot has women orientation no specific recommendations from me on suitable viewer segment. A movie clearly brings in lot of difference to the wave of comedy and other light entertainers in 2007. With a traditional and thought provoking storyline, it was successful to amuse you throughout. If anyone is not so happy with the movie, it could be an expectation mismatch.

I will keep the rating a notch above 3 with a recommendation to watch it with spouse, fiancée or friend in a multiplex.
