If you are looking for glitz, glam, the sound of TVs, elevators, punctuated by beeps, telephones and ring tones you've come to the wrong place.  We've just spent 3 days at this resort and came back very relaxed and happy for the experience of  Kerala's hospitality.

Kayaloram Resort echoes Kerala's motto "God's own country" and is very tastefully and thoughtfully presented.  We were greeted with warm smiles amidst  a sea of butterflies.  It is a heritage resort and the grounds are laid out with quaint cottages that have either lake or garden view with shared  balcony space. Guest rooms are in four transplanted and remodeled 75-year-old tharavads with wraparound teak verandas and intricately patterned architectural features.

The garden view cottages are are on the main walkway but look out to a  gorgeous landscaping of tropical flowers dotted with coconut trees laden with tender coconuts.  Best bet are the cottages with lake view- an idyllic setting for utmost relaxation, better privacy and very magical views of the lake and sunrise. Inside the cottages have a rustic but modern, elegant charm,  with wooden door hinges and a beautifully decorated outside bathroom.  The bathroom provides a unique experience, of showering open air under the sky, moon and stars, amidst the clacking of the coconut leaves in the breeze.  The housekeeping staff are wonderful, responsive and the rooms and garden area were kept very clean.

Some quirky details here, is that there are no telephones in the rooms or room service.  Not too much of a bother since it's a short and pleasant walk to reception and the restaurant. The rooms have that awful, stark, white bright florescent lights and very scratchy top sheets, which is most unpleasant at night and can kill any romantic pursuits.  In the interest of eco tourism...the air conditioning is only turned on from 9pm -6am, regardless of what the temperature is during the day.  The walls are paper thin and you hear everything......everything that your next door neighbors are doing.  The fan and air conditioning are good sound buffers though.  Speaking of sound.. it would have been a courteous gesture by the management to inform us that for two out of the three nights of our stay, there were large group birthday parties scheduled on the small, intimate setting grounds. The noise went on well into the night. If you choose to stay here ask up ahead about the scheduled parties and agree before hand  on a discounted rate if one " suddenly" pops up.

With such detailed attention placed on most everything  else at this resort, the restaurant was an area that was sorely lacking.  Consider arranging to eat elsewhere if you can. The restaurant staff  needs to be retrained in customer relations and food presentation.  Unfortunately the buck stopped short here as the restaurant staff had no Kerala smiles nor hospitality.   The lunch was tasty enough cooked fresh, but any buffet lunch and dinner  was always cold and looked like it was the last dregs of food..... (even when we arrived only a few minutes after the scheduled start).

The resort boasts an accreditied ayurvedic clinic.  Don't waste your money here unless you want to be lightly oil slicked in a dingy room amidst the sounds of daily workers sawing and hammering throughout your treatment at a mere 10 feet away. We both were really looking forward to coming out relaxed and rejuvenated but was sorely disappointed.   It was anticlimactic  bordering on an  irritating experience.  The attendant was friendly enough but her treatment technique and the environment left much to be desired.  Thank goodness for our prior experience in Cochin that was  a most amazing ayurvedic treatment at Soft Touch  Ayurvedic Center  there are a few branches though out Kerala with competent doctors and massage technicians.

Kudos to the management staff who provided good personal service throughout our stay there.  The complimentary sunset tour is definitely a must. The assistant manager can arrange any tour packages to suit your every need from basic taxi PU, temple touring, to backwater houseboats and country canoe tour (we had a great canoe guide Rajim).  He arranged a half day tour of the backwaters from the resort  in a houseboat which was simply a divine experience.   Ask for houseboat  with Vikram the chef/ cultural guide and his staff.  He was superbly attentive and informative.  We enjoyed his chef's specialty of an incredibly delicious traditional Keralean meal served on  banana leaf while idling away an afternoon aboard a slowly drifting kettuvallam, sipping coconut water and learning about the culture of Kerala's backwater.

Get the 3 day package deal it can save you some bucks.  If you are OK with some of the quirkiness and know what's in stock before hand I would defintely recommend this resort to anyone.*
