Around 1730, Maharajah Jai Singh II constructed an astronomical observatory in Jaipur. The Jantar Mantar or'calculation instrument' as it translates, is a group of fourteen unique structures, each with a specialized function for astronomical measurement. The fourteen devices are used for measuring time, predicting eclipses, tracking stars' location as the earth orbits around the sun, and a few things I can't remember. My favorite was the samrat yantra, which is a 27 meter tall sundial. It can be used to tell the time to an accuracy ofabout two seconds. I would have tested it but my watch isn't that accurate.Jantar Mantar was named a World Heritage Site in 2010.The ancient astronomical facility is open every day between 9: 30 and 16: 30 and the entrance fee is Rs200 plus an additional fee of Rs50for cameras.
