Stunning, Shocking, Pulsating....

Based on a 1954 novel by the same name, but deviating from the original story, this Will Smith starring blockbuster promises spectacular visual effects and a stellar performance by the actor in a film which has only him on-screen for most of its frame time. I Am Legend delivers all that and leaves you stunned at what you have witnessed for the 90 minutes. It may not be the best film of the year but you will have spilled a lot of popcorn while watching this one.

Director Francis Lawrence shows New York city abandoned by its inhabitants, eerie and worn with the lone survivor of a deadly outbreak that wiped out about 98% of the human population. As he races through the empty streets in a sports car with his dog, on the trail of caribou, Will Smith's desperation and reserve as the solitary human in Manhattan is displayed through his exceptional act. He may not have matched Tom Hanks in Castaway but controlling a sci-fi film on his shoulders, he has done very well. The film's opening sequence of the caribou chase leaves everyone stunned by the cinematography and effects. The hunting and research that Robert Neville carries out during the day goes towards his research in finding a cure for the deadly virus that has turned the last surviving of the human race into blood thirsty zombies who venture out at night to find whatever remains of the abandoned world. Robert Neville's life centers around the hope of discovering the cure and passing through those days without encountering the zombies.

The special effects and action give you enough jolts to make you spill your popcorn. There is excitement, thrill, emotion, tragedy and a heroic but sad climax. All the action sequences and zombie conflicts are shockingly real. There may have been numerous films on the zombie theme in the past which only amused most people but I am Legend successfully portrays the zombies as strikingly real creatures that actually scare you.

One needs to watch I am Legend for its shocking visual effects, scenes of the desolate Manhattan, Will Smith's stunning performance and Frank Lawrence's gripping direction . For 1 hr 30 mins, it is fantastic entertainment.

8.012 on a scale of 1-10.
