The biggest dilemma faced by most urban class people in India is keeping a healthy weight. Though they may talk the whole day about calories or join gyms or go for early morning or late evening walks or go for crash diets but all in vain. They are just not able to shed those extra pounds.

So let me share my tips on healthy weightloss. You can be sure that these strategies will work since I have reduced my weight by almost seven kgs in one year and kept it that way for the last four years. And no, I have not joined any gym, nor have I resorted to dieting:

  1. Go without sugar

Believe me, nothing will work as long as you keep drinking that sugary coffee and tea. Just quit looking at mithai, cakes and jalebis. Use artificial sweeteners for your beverages(Equal works just fine for my coffee). Even if you have to eat sweets, reduce the quantity.

  1. Exercise

If you have time on your hands, go ahead and join a gym for weight training or aerobics. However, if you are like me and totally short of time all the time and just cannot fit a gym in your schedule, do not worry. Just make sure you are active the whole day. Don?t lie about, munching on chips. Get up and start moving. Don?t rely on servants and fetch that glass of water yourself. And while you are on your way to the kitchen, straighten that tablecloth, fix that leaking tap and pick up that towel from the floor. Walk fast and straight. Jog to the car, run to your working place and hop on those stairs. Don?t worry if people stare. It?s your body and it?s your life.

  1. Stop mid-meal snacking

Stick to three meals a day and keep them simple. Make sure that you never, ever go hungry. Get a full feeling after every meal, so that you are not eyeing anything between meals. Often diets go wrong because you are feeling hungry all the time, so you tend to pig out sometime or the other.

  1. Reduce your social life:

That?s the cardinal rule. If you want to reduce your weight, decline invitations to calorie rich parties politely. Work hard, come home in time to have your simple home made food and sleep. Sorry to sound boring but that?s it. There?s no way you can battle the bulge if you are eating out often. However much you try, you will end up overeating when you are dining out.

  1. Increase your protein intake and reduce carbohydrates

If you a vegetarian, eat more of dal and less rice and chapattis. Do not stop eating carbohydrates completely, as is being propagated by a certain Atkins diet since carbohydrates are also essential for the body. Just don?t eat too much of them. If you are a non-vegetarian, eat a lot of eggs(not the yolk-just the white of the egg), chicken and fish. No red meat. Absolutely ban red meat. It?s very unhealthy.

  1. Get worried about your body image

Don?t listen to people who tell you to take it easy and stop worrying about the future and eat merrily. You don?t need them. You should worry about your health and your body? of course within healthy limits. Don?t kill yourself with worry but keep a check on your body weight all the time. Fix a minimum and a maximum limit of your weight(within four kgs) and make sure that your weight does not cross those limits, either way.

  1. Develop good sleeping habits

Go to bed early and wake up early. Yeah! That advice we heard in childhood holds good here also. Sleeping late almost always leads to increase in weight. Make sure that you do not sleep for more than seven hours. Excess sleep makes the body sluggish, lazy and more prone to put weight.

  1. Think of your kids

If you have kids, then you should know that your children will simply imitate your eating habits. So you should set a good example to them. I feel very scared when I see so many obese children these days. So whenever I feel myself weakening, I think of the slim, perfect bodies of my kids and that's enough to get my will power back on the tracks. Also, remember, if you get fat and unhealthy. you are bound to die early. And you can't afford to do that. Your children need you.

Ok. That?s enough advice, I think. These tricks worked for me though of course, every individual experience is different.
