I first came to know of this shop when I was visiting a friend. She'd ordered glasses for her husband and she was looking at the pair. The way she praised the shop made me want to visit it.

Gangar's Aundh branch is in a convenient locality. With Kaka Halwai, Shiv Sagar and other well-known eateries around, it would be easy to schedule a visit. Just Books is across the road as is Bata and Titan. So you can, quite easily, combine your general shopping trip with your need for a frame or a new pair of spectacles.

I went there in late 2012, I think. I needed to find out if my power had changed as I had bought my last pair of glasses in 2009 or so. Realising that we do not usually buy spectacles everyday, and that your glasses can define your look, I took my time selecting the frames.

It was a bit irritating as the shop assistant went on showing me expensive ones, and, what is worse, age appropriate frames.

One bad experience in shopping, these days, is that you are only guided to the expensive items and, if you are not interested in them, the shop assistants lose interest in you. However, in Gangar, there are many young men and women, and I finally found one boy who seemed to understand me. I settled for a frame with red temples (the sides). It gave me a youthful look and made me quite eye-catching!

Unfortunately, it did not last long. I went back to them but, this time, I could not find similar frames. I wanted frames with another colour for the sides.

Therefore, I went to another shop for my next pair of frames. But it was during this search that I realised how much value added service Gangar provides in comparison. While I confess I became unfaithful, my husband has been a regular customer.

However, even though I have not yet gone there a second time, I went there recently as, when I went for a free eye check up at another shop, I was told I had cataract. I visited Gangar to ask them to recommend an eye doctor. I find their optometrist inspires great confidence in me. She, as well as the other lady assistants there, prove that Gangar puts a premium on capable and smart women in their shops. I am slightly biased in favour of women as I feel they are less likely to force me to spend more and are more able to be caring. This girl suggested an ophthalmologist who was conveniently located for me.

Finally, Gangar gives you your purchases in a lovely chic plastic bag and I do love their glasses cases too. All in all, they are very professional in their approach-phoning you to inform you when your glasses are ready among other things.

It is, also, good to note that they have a charity component: eye4all, whereby you can donate old spectacles, expired eyewear (number change), glasses which are out of fashion, etc. which are generally thrown away. But these could be a boon for someone else.

Recent research has noted that about 314 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they lack proper eyecare and eyewear.

Gangar , as a part of corporate social responsibility, has joined hands with a charitable trust involved in improving vision for adults and children in need who cannot afford basic eye care. So Gangar takes old spectacles and the trust then passes on these spectacles after a free eye examination, to those in need.

So you can donate your old spectacles at any of their stores by simply dropping them into a drop box. Once the box is full, it is sent to the charitable trust from where it is given to those who require it. Phone: +(91)-20-25898635
