Frankfurt Intl. Airport - A VERY cool place
Jan 09, 2007 10:26 AM 1868 Views

The first thing that comes to your mind when you land at Frankfurt's International airport is that it is ONE COOL PLACE. Seriously. For starters, it is HUGE. Handles a lot of air traffic, LOTS of passengers and yet, the efficiency is remarkable. German efficiency, as they call it. Excellent. From the minute you get out of your flight, everything is just so smooooth, fast, structured and in its place that inspite of being real big, it is DIFFICULT to get lost there. And on the COOL quotient, I'd give it a 10 out of 10.

Here's an overview.

The design: It is a well designed airport. Routes and instructions are marked VERY clearly. You cannot get lost here. There are plenty of good options to eat here.that is not a problem. Even if you don't have lounge access, there's this whole bunch of reclining kinda chairs where you can relax comfortably. You need not have sit upright for a damn lot of hours if your next flight is gonna be after many hours. Just keep in mind that if you fall asleep here, keep your luggage under your feet or something so that it's safe. If you're in transit and you have a long time to go before your next flight, there are these bathrooms where you can take a nice hot shower. These are paid bathrooms. The fee is not much and after a shower and all, you'll feel refreshed. The general bathrooms of course are free.but you cant take a shower there, you know. The Skynet train that runs between the terminals is also cool. Its route and halts are also real easy to understand.

Staff: The staff is friendly and very co-operative. As a child, when I was travelling alone via this airport once, I found that they were friendly and real nice to me. But chances are that you wont need to do too much of asking aroud. Everything's marked clearly. There is no dearth of airport staff here. So if at all you feel, confused, some staff member will always be in sight. You wont have to go far.

Food: Not a problem. Even if your'e a vegetarian, it wont be too much of a problem. I remember getting veg pastas and a Haagen Dazs icecream and a softdrink easily. And once you discover that this particular restaurant has so and so vegetarian dishes, you can go to that same place everytime you're at Frankfurt airport. And if you're not a strict vegetarian, then its no problem at all.

Shopping: Good. You'll find good brands here.

Lounges: THE BEST PART. I've seen the Lufthansa lounges here and they're just great. If you have lounge access, then you'll have a great time. You can take a shower here and freshen up. They have LOTS of food options.biscuits, little cakes, lots of juices, tea coffee, fruits.its a long list. The varieties keep changing. You'll find newspapers and magazines to keep you occupied. The seating is comfortable. If you wanna keep your luggage here, then they'll give you this facility where you can keep your luggage in a locker kind of thing. And when you get back from your sight-seeing(if you've taken a city tour), you can open it with the keys that they've given you and take it back.

Sight-seeing: If you have 7 to 8 hours of transit time or more, then GET OUT and see the city. City tours are easily available from the airport and they're convenient. And you'll enjoy them. Frankfurt is a nice place to see. There are different kinds of city tours. Some are general where you have to see the city with a bunch of other a group. But there is another option where you can have a separate guide and car. Its a little costlier but its better coz if you feel that you have to get back to the airport or you're tired, you can always turn back. So before opting for any kind of tour, just make sure you ask the guy at the desk for all details. You don't wanna be late for your flight.

What else to say? I've been to this airport about 4 times now and I like it.I enjoy being here. Its difficult to get bored. Unarguably, one of the best.
