Story:

An excerpt from COSMOS, a science bestseller by Carl Sagan (renowned astronomer) demonstrates the need for united existence on the planet: “The Cosmos may be densely populated with intelligent beings. But the Darwinian lesson is clear: There will be no humans elsewhere. Only here. Only on this small planet.

We are a rare as well as an endangered species. Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.”The COSMOS is an eye-opener for all, the need for peaceful existence i.e. self-survival on this Lilliputian planet of ours as compared to the colossal Cosmos, because for all we know, we are the sole possessor of the boon called life bequeathed to us mistakenly by means of the irony called Evolution, by Nature.

The COSMOS is an enriching experience for all, even for those of non-science background. It tells us that presence of life on this planet is a mere coincidence, especially considering that if we were randomly inserted into the Cosmos, the chance that we would find ourselves on or near a planet would be less than one in billion trillion trillion (1033). It opens our eyes to the fact that we exist today as we are, as a result of innumerable coincidental mutations over billions of years, and that is the reason we must strive to exist for centuries, if not millennia to come and not self-destruct!

COSMOS illustrates the significant inventions and discoveries made by humans through the centuries (mostly in chronological order), highlighting the opportunities squandered along the way, finally arriving at where we stand today. But mainly the COSMOS focuses at enlightening the general reader of the enormities, marvels, perplexities and enigmas, but yet immense potentialities of the Cosmos. An intriguing, exciting and exhilarating experience. A book which took the status of Carl Sagan from (merely) an acclaimed astronomer to Mr. Science!
