Lakhs of students appear for SSC every year and this question looms large on their minds as well as their parents. Yet wrong criterias influence their career decision. The major pitfalls are:

  1. b>Choosing a career based on hearsay b> :Normally parents tend to be largely influenced by what their relatives, friends and neighbours have to say - which may not always be correct. ''My brother is an engineer; he earns a lot of money:, ''there is lot of scope in computers'', etc, are more often the deciding statements for your child but remember that they may not apply to your child's aptitude.

  2. b> Choosing a career based on friends choice b> Most of the students today are grrrrrrrrrreatly under the spell of their friends; they want to be with their friend circle at any cost; even if they have to choose a career for which they may be least suited.

  3. b> Wrong Notions b> Surprising even in this fast expanding world, people hold some branches of studies as highly prestigious, eg. SCIENCE. So many times it has been seen that parents want their child to take up science after ssc irrespective of whether he/she would be able to cope up with its syllabus or not. Even students with low percentage in ssc are pushed into science. The result is a heavy percentage of failures and high number of dropouts and crossovers to commerce/arts at a later stage.

b> The most important thing to remember while choosing a career for you ward/child is

a. find out what he/she is best aptituted for

b. find out his/her interests

c. every child is unique; each child has his/her own strong points; one may be good academically other may be good in aesthetic skills and still other in social skills.

d. dont forget to ask the child his / her choice

e. teachers are the best one to guide you and they know your child's capacity better.

f. dont hesitate to go in for career counselling, it will prove beneficial in the long run. But please choose a good counsellor.
