One can never doubt Julio Ribeiro's credentials. And one can not help listening when he speaks. So when he writes a book, most of us are eagerly awaiting a no-nonsense, straight-from-the-heart account of his life as a supercop.

The book is an ''account'' alright but it's a surprisingly mellow Ribeiro that speaks from it. In that the title ''Bullet for bullet'' is a misnomer. Ribeiro doesn't ''gun down'' any person politician or otherwise in this book. Thats because it was not meant to be his autobiography but only an account of his tenure as a cop, envoy, mayor and to some extent the family man he was.

Ribeiro talks about his transition from a small town police officer to an anti-terrorist supercop who would effectively put an end to the terrorism in Punjab. His problems as a cop in a small town and his way of dealing with them should serve as an eye-opener for the various civil servants who are working in such areas. And his handling of various politicians at different times and situations is as sound example for those to follow who complain of political interference.

Ribeiro's finest hours were obviously as the Commissioner of Police,Bombay and in Punjab. He narrates those times candidly and with no attempt to twist facts to present his case. That's a novelty for memoirs ! That makes fascinating reading.

Overall the book is a pleasant memoir of the supercop. It is apolitical, unbiased and without any sense of ego or self-appreciation. The language is pretty good and easy to follow. Ribeiro remains true to the soul of the book and predictably divulges few details of himself as a person.

It's a must reading for anyone who wishes to make a career in civil services or for that matter any honest citizen of our country. Real life heroes don't come too often !
