Big Airport in a Small Space

Boston's Logan airport has long been the major airport for both international flights and flights within New England. Several of the terminals (there are 5 separate buildings) were redone and are airy and comfortable with nice shops and restaurant areas. There are children's play areas in a couple-a great boon to families who need to let the little ones run around in a safe place before settling into seats for a long flight. Airport staff(sky caps, parking attendants etc.) are generally helpful; although there is great variety in the ticketing and gate staffs as these are hired by the individual airlines. They range from extremely helpful to downright surly. Delays for both incoming and outgoing flights are common especially in winter.

Getting to the airport is a major headache. There is an extensive road construction project in process so roads and exits are frequently changing. Once on the airport property, there are large signs directing traffic to the correct terminals and parking. Parking is expensive and often you will have to walk long distances with your luggage. Luggage carts are only available once you are in the terminal area unless someone else has recently used one to get to the parking level where you are and no one else has scooped it up. Parking for pick ups is also difficult as there is very little short term parking near the baggage claims so again, be prepared to walk a distance. For those who need it there are taxis. They are expensive. Those going to a hotel or convention should check for courtesy transportation. There is also an extensive system of bus transportation including a bus that will take you to the ''T''-Boston's subway system. Car rentals are available from all the major companies. They are off site and you will be taken to your car by a courtesy bus.

For those who live within or are visiting the city, Logan remains your best bet. Those south or southwest may want to consider Providence RI and those on the North and West sides might want to try Bradley in Hartford Ct. if your airline flies to one of these. Both are much easier to access and have more plentiful, less expensive parking.

Boston is well aware of the difficulties of their airport-but the bottom line is that there just isn't any more land available.
