Vidya Balan starrer Begum Jaan is Srijit mukherji's bengali original Rajkahani(2015). Story of the movie is about eleven girls who refuses to part away during the partion of India and pakistan. Their brothel comes in the lines of Red cliff. Begum jaan( Vidya balan) is the owner of the brothel, who is a soft hearted women, but externally she was strict.
Movie starts with an immense powerful scene, where a young girl, raped and harassed. The rape seen will remain in your mind for sometime. Young girl is saved by a elderly women. Only this scene is good. Misic of the movie is quite which help in extending the story of the movie.
Powerful story of rajkahani is wasted in the poor direction of Srijit mukherji. Vidya balan, Gauhar khan, pallavi sharda all the actors are good in their role, they have given their 100%. Story is two good but the screenplay is worst. Shaky camera, sleepy editing, poor direction, noisy character screaming unnecessarily throughout the film pierce your ear and you crave for a soft silent sequence but in vain.
1st half of the film looks promising but 2nd half is an overdose of screaming emotion. One can never understand why Rajat kapoor and Ashish vidyarthi are always shown in half profile peeping at the audience whenever they exchange major dialogue. If Vidya balan are the showstopper of the begum jaan, Gauhar khan, Chunkey pandey, and Sumit Nijhawan are her most worthy partner. Pandey remains in your memory for sometime although movies location is quite good.
some dialogue are effective which will remain in your mind like " marna hi hai to ranio ki tarah apni mahal me marenge " or mahina ginna hume aata h sahab jab bhi ata hai sala lal krke jata h.
Vidya balan and other actors have put their full effort but in poor direction, sleepy editing, noisy character screenplay are not good which will make you feel bore in the cinema hall. The 134 minute Begum jaan has Vidya balan in good form, but it lacks cohesiveness as a complete story
