Well....It's a very good review... SONU NIGAM:-He will never be a GREAT singer.Yes I can say this to him in front of him without shuddering. He simply lacks the qualities of great singer..... 1}His voice is very Shallow & lacks the depthness-The one we find in Kishore, Raffi & Udit. These three have... awesome depthness. 2}The number of harmonics decides the depthness in voice.Sonu has low number of harmonics.Lata also has low no. of harmonics but she never breaks the flow of melody & never breaths while singing...It irritates me when people compare sonu with Lata Mangeshkar. 3}Sonu tries to be more expressive.Too many expressions nullify the beauty of melody.... 4}All I can say....He is good singer.Yes some of his songs are very very good but that doesn't mean he will be at par with Raffi or Kishore or Udit after some years....Those three have unique voice & others try to copy them.. Have to go now... Cheers, ZosterRead More

Man again you r getting it wrong..don't take my comments by word for word..I said 10-13 hrs...Now please don't tell me no one pracitces 10 hrs each day..They do practice that much man...Ustad Zakir Hussain used to get up at 3am in the morning to practice more than 10 hrs a day... About pushan b...ecoming a good sarod player...I made those remarks cosidering he is being taught under guidence of a good sarod player..don't be harsh on me...I don't know his methods of practicing... About the flaws in instrument design..well efforts are being made..Hook system developed for sitar by Pt.Ravi shankar is the evidence of that..I myself have made my guitar 'Fretless' to play perfect Glissando...Everyone designs instruments that suits to his style of playing..may be you should redesign the sarod to overcome the flaws...I think that's not to difficult if you know CAD/CAM softwares like CATIA & ANSYS...Use Ansys for designing the sarod...Apply different forces to the strings...apply ur finger pressure at various points on the strings...check and analyse the whole system till you get desired results...Virtual designing will consume less time...I can say same for learing Ragas...Download 'Ragaparichaya' & forget the Gurus.... Thanks for m2m....I can give a monthly loooong lecture on this one...but it would be fruitful if I learn something in that time...So it's enough for the jiffy...As usual no hard feelings...Ye to chalata rahega..... Man man man....For pete's sake don't teach me what is Raga? I have learnt far more beyond that..About VNB..well I don't know much about this man and frankly I don't know whether VNB's theory claims that 'Scale resembles to thata' or not...I agree that there are flaws in VNB's theory..but you sho...uld admit that VNB made a great effort to put entire 'Indian classical music' in a frame which rely on just 10 thatas...All modern Indian classical music is based on 10 thatas...All 100's of Ragas can be sorted out in these 10 thatas...This makes VNB's theory simple and easy to understand...About Gaud malhar and MKM classification, well I can say the same about Deskar and Bhoop...Deskar goes to Bilawal and Bhoop belongs to Kalyan...But these flaws can be ignored..If one has to sort 100's of Ragas then even 72 thatas of South indian music will fail to jusitice eachone... About comparison between indian and western music,I don't know what's wrong in it?Why do you think only half-baked and dump ones can make this comparison? Tell me frankly,am I really wrong when I say Indian music is superior to western?...If so then please tell my western musician friends to play 'Bole re papihara' song or any thing indian classical live on harmonium with me..I tell you all of'em will fall short on their knees...But ask me to play anything live that those westerns paly..I bet I can accompany them quite easily without reading anything..See,I am not disrespecting western music...But you should be aware of the fact that westerns find it difficult to recognise the strange microtonal(Gamaks, shrutis etc..)intervals...Western music is apparent while Indian music is deep, difficult to fathom...Read More

Hi Pushan...Actually I was talking about learning Ragas. And I am still firm that anyone can identify 25-30 Ragas within a year just by listening.Learning to play an instrument is another thing. To master any instrument (excluding keyboard) it takes atleast 7 years with 10-13 hrs of daily practice....Also many players try to play the compositions of other greats. But I am totally against it.This way it will take years to be a master.Whenever one learns something say Raga Bhairavi,he should immediately start composing his own composition in that raga. This way he will get more familiarize with the instrument and will start recognizing intervals very fast.I don't know why you haven't master the sarod yet? Maye be ur method is wrong. If you r spending say just 2 hrs a day it will take you another 5 years to master it.But you will master it for sure. Also may be you r pressing the strings hard.Don't do that.Let the weight of your fingers press the strings. This way you can play 'Glissando/sliding' very fast. Also start composing some new songs/compsitions/Ragas....I bet this will make you a very good sarod player. You won't believe but I have mate many guitar teachers who r playing guitar for 15 years but haven't composed anything on their own !! I mean playing other's compositions for 15 years is just ridiculous. How can they master the instrument? Cheers, ZosterRead More

Rohit:-the western modern classical and even rock is more flexible and not very rigid at conception... but the singer can bring life into a song by weaving his magic into the notes... Zoster:- Rohit! You got it right....Don't you think this is nothing but the derivative of Indian Classical Music?.......This Rock/jazz stuff is derived from indian music.......Indian music is melodious while western is orchestra oriented....Comparison is bound to happen....Somehow western music doesn't appeal me much...Those gruff voices makes me homicidal..LOL...They change the 'key centers' like nappies....I find it foolish..... The concept of 'Raga' is found only in Indian classical music. It is a lustrous feather in Indian Classical music that splendidly differentiates Indian Classical music & western music.Infact, western musicians are inveigled by 'Raga' concept. The concept 'Raga' is nothing but the manifestation of grea...t indian talent by great indian artists.Do not mistake a 'Scale' for a Raga. Both are totally different concepts. Two different Ragas can have same scale but the order of notes, use of various other microtonal notes & other factors distinguishes them from each other. While Scale resembles to 'Thata'. Indian Classical music is far superior to western music. The words of jazz, folk & electronic music have all been influenced by our music coz they found something they didn't already have. But our music grows within itself. We don't have to read music. It is always played by Ear.Western musicians find it difficult to play fluently without reading coz their Ears are not attuned to the strange microtonal intervals involved. Also don't mislead others. It doesn't take lifetime to be a master. It is hard work that matters.Anyone can identify 25-30 Ragas within a period of year just by listening provided he pracitces 3-4 hrs a day.Take it from 23 yr Zoster. No hard feelings friend..... Cheers, ZosterRead More
