I wanted to fit a disc brake to my bike. I am in Bangalore. I went to Presidency cycle shop located near Town Hall (near Corporation circle). The person in the shop showed me front and rear disc brakes. I chose to buy the rear one. Trouble started - read on.
1. Need to alter existing cycle frame or get an adapter to fit it to existing cycle.
2. Went to 3 cycle shops and they said its not possible.
3. Atlast went to my bike mechanic who is ready and eager to try new things. He somehow contacted a local welder and somehow got the thing fixed.
4. Had to fit the wheel hub . So had to remove my existing wheel, remove the existing hub and fit new one. took a day for this. In this process the guy broke one of my rear fly wheels and so i had to get a new one (7 gear model costs around 450 for shimano make)
5. Took a week for me to get the entire setup done. Now my disc brake in cycle looks sexy but it doesnt do the job its supposed to - brake. Again went to mechanic and tightened the cable and again it doesnt work effectively.
6. Got irritated and removed everything and now am happy.
Its better to go with conventional brake mechanism. I hope that a cycle which comes with factory fitted disc brakes might be better, but not sure. Now with my original brakes fitted back to the cycle its performing well.
The brake pads - I dont think are available in the market once the original one gets worned out and needs replacement. The spares - Checked with many shops and the reply - we are seeing this for first time.
So please do not go for this unless u really need to try this out.
