Disc Brake for Bicycle - Think twice

Posted on Oct 07, 2009 under General

I wanted to fit a disc brake to my bike. I am in Bangalore. I went to Presidency cycle shop located near Town Hall (near Corporation circle). The person in the shop showed me front and rear disc brakes. I chose to buy the rear one. Trouble started - read on.

1. Need to alter existing cycle frame or get an adapter to fit it to existing cycle.
2. Went to 3 cycle shops and they said its not possible.
3. Atlast went to my bike mechanic who is ready and eager to try new things. He somehow contacted a local welder and somehow got the thing fixed.
4. Had to fit the wheel hub . So had to remove my existing wheel, remove the existing hub and fit new one. took a day for this. In this process the guy broke one of my rear fly wheels and so i had to get a new one (7 gear model costs around 450 for shimano make)
5. Took a week for me to get the entire setup done. Now my disc brake in cycle looks sexy but it doesnt do the job its supposed to - brake. Again went to mechanic and tightened the cable and again it doesnt work effectively.
6. Got irritated and removed everything and now am happy.
Its better to go with conventional brake mechanism. I hope that a cycle which comes with factory fitted disc brakes might be better, but not sure. Now with my original brakes fitted back to the cycle its performing well.

The brake pads - I dont think are available in the market once the original one gets worned out and needs replacement. The spares - Checked with many shops and the reply - we are seeing this for first time.

So please do not go for this unless u really need to try this out.

AeroIndia 2009 Airshow

Posted on Feb 17, 2009 under General

This years airshow saw participants from across the globe like Lockeed (F16), Boeing (F18 hornet), Saab (JAAS Gripen), Eurofighter Typhoon, MIG 35, Sukhoi 30 MKI etc. fighter jets, Globe Master, Hercules etc. transport aircrafts, trainers etc. The acrobatic displays were astonishing especially the Sarang helicopter team and Surya kirans. The exhits were nice too.

This time the bangalore traffic department did a good job and reaching the place was not that difficult. But after reaching the place it took almost 1 hr to cross the security check point. Infact all the combat air crafts had finished the acrobatics by that time. We couldnt peacefully watch this since we were caught in the crowd. Although we reached the venue before time we could make it in at 11 AM , well 1 hr after the show had started. Afternoon we went to the Food court which had coffe day, Subway, Kamat etc. outlets and after almost 2 hrs of waiting too we couldnt get any food but a glass of cola. It was clearly visibile that the didnt manage it properly or were they prepared to manage such a huge crowd. Kingfisher managed to sell beer well.

Most of us were worn out almost by the end of day standing in the sun without food, but the fantastic acrobatics and static displays gave us a sence of satisfaction.

Wanted to share some pictures I captured at the show. You can find them in the link below
