Baul song here in Birbhum has a great history. The 'Paush Festival' (December 23-27) is now held in Santiniketan which was set up by Debendra Nath Tagore. That time it was known as Baul Mela (Baul Fair). There were a gathering of bauls from the different parts of the state. Rabindranath ...transferred it as 'Poush Utsav'. And it reformed as larger way. Also Debendranath built the house 'Santiniketan' (behind the Glass House) as a Rest House of the pilgrim travellers (those who were used to travel the different pilgrim places through Bolpur). Rabindranath afterwards named the whole place Santiniketan and formed Ashrama. Baul (traditional folk song of the villages specially in Birbhum, parts of Bihar, Bardhaman and parts of Bankura). Rabindranath was very much fond of baul song and he composed his few songs with Baul tune.Read More

I have gone through BB Mohanty's comments on Visva-Bharati. But it is based on the dream what Rabindranath had. Now Rabindranath is no more here. Several changes have been taken place all around this university. What Rabindranath wanted to make a relationship between this university and the adjacent... rural areas, specially through direct involvement or participation in this university (though it became an university later after Rabindranath). The rural reconstruction programme is not carrying on now by this university which was set up by Tagore in Sriniketan. All the developmental work are self-centric in the university. The research scholars just study the villages for their own degree. And what is required to own a degree, the scholars study up to that portion. No in-depth study has been taken place in this university for quite some time. But some other senior professors (retired and ongoing) tried hard to achieve the goal what Tagore had an ideology. Some intensive studies were carried out by Prof. Sunil Sengupta in Agro Economic Research Centre, Visva-Bharati and Palli Charcha Kendra, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan (with collaboration with Prof. Amartya Sen) but after that there was no intensive study nor there is any programme to uplift the rural poor in the field of education, social justice, etc. The adjacent rural areas are automatically grown up with the society that has been changed by the time and technological growth.
Because where political disturbance is the main problem in the institutional area such as Visva-Bharati, no developmental work can be established. Some officers are involved with the scams for last 5 years. Here is running the contest to enjoy the power and money within the high ranking officials and union leaders for the last 6-7 years.
It was Prof. Amlan Dutta, who was an ideal Vice Chancellor of this university. But after him, the darkness has been spreaded over throughout the university in education, administration, health system, etc.
