Good exhaustive article. Media and brokers do give a lot of hogwash, but MFs aren't necessarily bad - in fact if you chose well, you stand to gain substantially. Wherever the returns are higher, there are bound to be some risks - that doesn't mean you stay away from all IPOs. The above article would... have been more balanced if you qualified it with a few lines on risk appetite ... currently it seems written for the low risk appetite person :) I have contemplated on Sensex vs Realty for some time, and found that Sensex offers many advantages : * Plot of land can be easily encroached - especially in high value areas like Bangalore, Gudgaon. * When you invest in a piece of land, you invest in the prospects of a particular location. Instead, if you buy DLF, you are buying small % of land that DLF has bought all over India. * When you buy land - you make a BIG one time investment - if this happens to be at the peak of a realty boom you could be stuck with poor profits or possibly losses for some time. Buying stocks allow you to average out your purchase buy spreading it over a period of time. * When you buy land, you are exposed to potential fraudulent deals. * When you buy shares, you have great liquidity - buy when you want, sell when you want. Having said that Realty is a great parking place for profits earned in the stock market. Having a balance across both stocks & realty is essential.Read More

Good article. Don't agree/understand - why not SIPs ? An individual usually doesn't save in lumpsums ... s/he usually saves in smaller amounts. Those smaller amounts should be diverted to a SIP regularly - sooner you invest, higher your returns. Disclaimer - I haven't had a SIP myself though I plan ...to start now. After 18 months in the market, have realised that Mutual Funds are the best way to invest (considering you are not a full time trader/investor).Read More

I have used it since 2000 - its one of the first few MPFI models. While it has been the only car I have owned, I have driven several other cars. I do not consider myself an expert on cars. Pros: Great reliability. Have used it for long drives (Pune-Goa, Pune-Kolhapur, etc) and on some very...Read more
