Hi Vibes (Do you have a real name?) You must be one of the few girls I have ever heard about / met who has actually read and liked Asimov... To me, he is God, I rate him higher than Shakespeare even...I have read his robot series, his foundation series, his black widower stories...let's just s...ay I am a big, big fan... To enjoy The Naked Sun to its fullest, read 'The Caves of Steel', 'The Naked Sun', 'Robots of Dawn' and 'Robots and Empire' in sequence... Robots of Dawn will blow your mind :-) And when you're finished...read his short stories...in every one of them, without exception, you will see a master at work... No one even comes within touching distance of the man (I will stop singing his praises now) SharathRead More

Hi Priya, You know, judging by how much attention I got on my last review, I was actually looking forward to a bit of the same with this one, but looks like hardly anyone cares anymore :-) Sonam Kapoor is Anil Kapoor's daughter...the only reason I know is because I have been watching Voice of ...India a lot lately and they Bhansali, Sonam and Ranbir come as guest judges, so to speak... All right, I will come out and say it. I am not a big fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In fact, I don’t like his movies at all. I didn’t like either Black or Devdas very much, and the less we talk about Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam the better. For someone who has only ever made five movies – over a perio...Read more

Did you change the title of your review from 'Khan masala movies get better than this?' to 'Masala movies khan't get better than this'? Why, though? Any reason for preferring the second one over the first? Sharath

Hi Vij, Yes, actually, I can tell you what I meant when I said 'unrealistic' characters in CDI...I had this discussion with Nithi on this page, but it will take you a while to find it, so I will repeat it here... I think it is important to draw the line between characters and caricatures (or s...tereotypes)...the best way to tell a good story is to first construct your characters and then put them in situations, allowing them to act according to their own personalities... Alternatively, you can create characters depending on the point you want to make...a bit like, 'hey, I need to show some sexism in the movie, so let me make a character that is sexist'...what happens in this case is that the story ends up with shallow, unidimensional characters, otherwise known as caricatures... Good authors, and good movie makers, realize this...they realize that people are not just good or just bad or just sexist...that is why they create characters as opposed to caricatures...to give concrete examples from the movie, take the cricketer...do you see him do anything but diss girls and hockey? That is a unidimensional character...another example is the board president... Caricatures do have their place in humour and satire, but in serious cinema, if you are using caricatures to make your point, it means either a) you are not a good enough film maker, or b) you know that most people won't see through your bluff...or it is a bit of both :-) In contrast, characters in Lagaan, every smallest one of them, have a little more depth than the ones in CDI...and that is the reason I liked Lagaan better...as an example, the character of Russell...the film-maker could show him just as a tyrant..but he went to the trouble of showing us few other sides to the character as well...why did he do that? To create a well-rounded character... SharathRead More

Hi Vij, Thanks for that...well I always look at HOW the movie is made rather than what it is about...mainly characters..forget about sets, music etc...for me, a movie is a story, and a story should be told with well-crafted characters, unless you are making a satire or a comedy... So even an u...nrealistic story can be told with well made characters...I don't mind sitting through an unrealistic story (after all, what are fantasy and sci-fi if not unrealistic) if it is told 'realistically'...but this one fails on that count...Lagaan, for all its 'unrealistic' aspects in the story, was told with believable characters... Having said that, I should have made that point clear in the review itself...I look at any review where the writer has to explain his point of view in the comments section as a failure...and this one has been in my eyes... Anyway, seeya round :-) SharathRead More

Hi Vijith, Thanks for that...since you made no attempt to question any of my 'real' points, I will have to pass by without saying anything of note here... The fact that it is an underdog story is not one of the main reasons I thought the movie was bad...there were many other issues...I think i...f you read this comments page from top to bottom, you will find that to be true... Don't question a movie if I can't judge it well? Who is to decide if my judgement is 'good' or not? I think it is, and I have given reasons for it...people have questioned my reasons, I have given explanations...if you have the patience, read the comments, if you don't (understandably, because there are a lot of comments), then I suspect we will have to agree to disagree :-) Thanks SharathRead More

Hi Ishan, To each his own...if you honestly believe that all it takes is for our captain to shake hands with the rival captain for us to cry 'foul', then believe it... Zidane was blamed for his headbutting, because headbutting is an offensive act...the last time I checked, there is nothing wro...ng or offensive about hand-shaking! :-) Even then, Zidane was never blamed for match-fixing, so your example is completely irrelevant...do you see that? Either way, if you believe that we are really as bad as that, then believe so...but do so in the absence of any evidence whatsoever...who am I to stop you if you want to be cling to blind belief? As for playing a sport for my country, did you play any sport for your country? :-) If not, how can you be sure of YOUR comments on patriotism? You don't have to have done something to critique it...I have never made a movie, but I still think I have the right to write about them...I have never written a book, but I think I know a good book when I see one...in the same way, I know there is nothing terribly patriotic about playing a game for your country... Do state players feel 'patriotic' for their state? Do district players feel 'patriotic' for their district? If none of the levels below the highest level has a sense of patriotism attached to it, why should the highest level? But we can keep arguing till the cows come home...it is not possible to treat these things comprehensively in a comments section...maybe I will write a review on it sometime and we can go at each other in the comments section of that one? :-) SharathRead More

Hi Ishan, So you are saying our media blames as a match-fixers all our players that shake hands with the rival players, just because they are Muslim? That's funny, because if that is the case we must have seen at least a hundred cases against Mohammad Kaif (or Irfan Pathan, or Zaheer Khan) because ...they shake hands after every game... My take on patriotism, that's a discussion for another time...but in the meantime, chew on this...you must have watched/played inter-school or inter-college tournaments...can you say you felt 'patriotic' for your school/college while watching/playing in those games? Loyalty? maybe, but patriotic? No. Because patriotism is a loaded word, and it encompasses many things...rooting your cricket team to win can hardly be called patriotism...but as I said, more on that later :-) Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment...Read More

Hi Ishan9855 I never said the 'muslim thing' didn't exist in India..of course it does...but does it exist in the same degree as it is shown in the movie? The movie suggests that all that is needed for a Muslim captain to shake hands with a Pakistani captain for us to blame him with match-fixing.....is that what really happens? Our sportspeople regularly shake hands with opposition players...it's part of being a sportsman...the movie thinks you are dumb enough to believe that hand-shaking implies match-fixing...are you really that dumb? Do you like your intelligence being made fun of like that? There have been many instances of Muslims caught in the act in our sporting world...Azharuddin is an example that comes straight away to mind...have we ever reacted, as a people, in the way it is shown in the movie? Have we ever thought, let alone say on national TV, that he should be sent back to Pakistan? So if neither the parameters of judgment nor the reaction is realistic, pray tell me, what is the reality that is shown in the movie? As for sports and patriotism, I repeat, there is nothing patriotic about playing a sport for your country...if the Indian cricket team instils a patriotic streak in you, keep it to yourself...as I said before, I want none of that make-believe world... Hi Chippi... You echoed exactly what I wanted to say...if we really believe we are a secular nation, we wouldn't drive home these points so forcefully everytime we win a game...now seriously, if the Hockey World cup takes place in Australia, you would expect an Australian to hoist the Indian flag...? Just like the same Australian would have hoisted the flags of all the other participating countires? I can't believe that has been converted into a 'gora hoisting an Indian flag'. Conversely, the cricket world cup is coming to India in 2011...then it will be the turn of some Indian to hoist the flags of all participating countries, including England..I wonder if movies coming out at that time will make fun of our colonial heritage saying, 'Hey look, shame on us, and Indian is hoisting an English flag. We are going back to colonial times'. But you know what? That angle will probably work on our people :-) About sports, look at the celebrations following the twenty20 win...to the best of my knowledge Vishwanathan Anand never got this reception in spite of performing consistently on the global stage...cricket definitely enjoys a monopoly in India, no doubt about that... Thanks a lot for leaving a comment :-) SharathRead More

Hi Utpal, I think if I were to write a slightly balanced version of what I did end up writing about this movie, it would have been eerily similar to what you had to say... I felt most of the sentiments you voiced...the overdose of chauvinism, patriotism, Muslim-bashing, and cricket-bashing...i...t was too...'in your face' I think is what I am trying to say :-) Apart from that, well written...I liked the overall quality of your writing...I am surprised you are not more popular than you are as a reviewer here on MS... Hi Jui (Heartzeal) Was just reading your comment once again and I thought I should make this distinction clear...characterization has got nothing to do with the story...you can have the most outlandish story ever and still have good characterization... Like a team of players who have never pla...yed cricket before... Of course, the converse is also true...even the most realistic story can fall flat because of faulty characterization...characterization is a technique of story-telling, it is not a part of the story itself... Hi Jui (Heartzeal) Your first comment eh? :-) You have made a fine start! (1) Thanks for the compliment...though that second sentence made no sense to me... (2) I agree with you, all movies contain emotional manipulation...though I think that good stories/movies make use of the emotions inh...erent in a situation and depict them...as opposed to raise an emotional storm over frivolous things...but you are right, it is a difference only in degree... (3) Yes, Hurray for them! :-) (4) Once again, I repeat, things are not as bad as they want to have us believe...we are all trying our best...and I think reminding ourselves over and over again how bad we are (when we are not that bad) is just..well, bad :-) (5) Yes, I still believe Lagaan had more realistic characters...as opposed to the caricatures that this movie had...forget how realistic the story itself was...the characterization was definitely a couple of notches higher than what they showed in CDI...but again, this is something which is very subjective...maybe my standards are too high... About the SRL/Aamir debate, I have a funny story to tell...as soon as I wrote the review, I got heaps of comments informing me I was a SRK fan...and then after I wrote this review, the first comment called me an Aamir Khan fan! :-) But anyway, thanks for the lengthy comment...
