The uncle who sells toys...

Posted on Oct 03, 2008 under My Scriblings

Very recently me and my best friend were busy in our respective plates of Paav Bhaaji when I saw the familiar site of a guy (let me address him as uncle from now on) aged about 45...selling very very basic toys (the ones priced between 10-30 rupees).

Everytime I see him I ask myself how can someone make a living in Mumbai by selling these toys, and seeing the fact that he never has a customer to himself, I pondered more and more...

Suddenly I saw a small kid kicking the ground, shouting and asking his father (who was busy on his mobile phone!) to buy a toy from the uncle...I was ecstatic! Kid's father wasn't very interested even when the kid insisted by intensifying his kicks to the ground and a high decibel shout...

As his father got into his expensive SUV, he tried to pull the kid inside...but the kid wont budge..thats when his father asked the uncle (who sells toys) to help him...the uncle cajoled the kid by telling him "Go for a around the road, papa will get you here again in 5 minutes"

As Uncle said these words, I could see a sense of sadness in his eyes... It broke my heart...

The kid zoomed away with his father...whereas uncle smiled and continued his efforts to persuade other people to buy from him...

Not all are born with good business mind isnt it?

Peace and equanimity to all.

14 months.....

Posted on Oct 01, 2008 under My Scriblings

(Erratic thoughts)

I saw you on July 30th (2007)
Realised what's love at first sight...

I took you around...and you were kind to oblige..
You made my birthday special...just by being there..

You got hit...still you smiled

At times I have treated you bad
Howled at you when you weren't at fault
At times I have vented my anger at you
When it was someone else's fault

But there you are...as always
Smiling and waiting

It rips me apart if someone else touches you
I don't like the sight of it

You have been with me always
I hope the bond never breaks....

Its been 14 months since I have you in my life
And I thank GOD for it...

Dedicated to my Maruti Swift VDi.... :P

Reality Check....while returning from office....

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 under My Scriblings

As I made an effort to sing-along with farhan akhtar in my car on my way back home, I saw 'a guy' who works in 'some' office in my office building waiting for a cab. I slowed down and asked him if he wanted a ride and given the fact that his destination was en route my destination, I asked him to join me...

Since I had to strike a conversation, I started talking about the beautiful sea-facing flats at marine drive...and the moment I was crossing Chowpati....I saw a lot of people there...One could have easily made out that most of them are working professionals...

I sarcastically remarked 'Look at these people, not much work at office it seems...just fooling around on a beach and that too on a weekday...looks like they don't have a deadline to meet'

This is when the 'guy' who had been silent for so long said...

''You know Rohit, sometimes the city just closes in to you...after all everyone isn't living is big spacious places...and what better place to forget about the compromised personal space than to come to a place where you see endless water and just shout.....This is mine!!!''

The words from the 'guy' left me thinking...and I am still thinking...

Notice how many times I have used 'I' above.....
Notice how many times I have referred him as 'guy'
Notice he addressed me as 'Rohit' and I still refer to him as 'guy'

I haven't achieved anything in life...but so much attitude!

Guess if we can forget the 'I', the world would be a much better place to be...

Peace and equanimity

The old man....

Posted on Sep 26, 2008 under My Scriblings

The wrinkles on his face were telling he has seen it all in his life and not comfortably. He must be 64 at least. He greeted us with a smile as he opened the door and asked us what would we like to have....Gladly coming off and on to re-fill the water....everytime with a smile longer than the earlier one...

I sat eating my lunch and and asked myself...should he be working at this age? I am yet to get a convincing answer....

When I die and go up there...God will have some very tough questions to answer...

Do Indian brands really exist?

Posted on Sep 26, 2008 under GyanEX

Was just browsing through interbrand's latest top 100 global brands list and seeing NO Indian brand getting a mention there, I asked this question to myself....Do Indian brands really exist?

I know brand managers will pounce on me saying 'its early days for brands in India' but I somehow don't buy this. We seem to be overwhelmed by over-supply of phoren brands (even a dollar store is present in India now!). Do we really promote our brands in our own country?? I guess not...Lee cooper shoes somehow sneak their way to our shopping bag...rather than, lets say a shoe made by Metro shoe company!

But then who am I to say this all...after all I am wearing a citizen watch (made in japan, I flaunt!)...just a quick check on your own wardrobe (even the computer you read this on!) will give you answers...

I somehow feel compelled NOT to accept the fact that we don't have domestic brands...Nirma, Amul, lijjat papad etc. aren't bad by any measure...

A quick look at the list, and I could roughly get that approx 90% of the brands mentioned are already present in India...

Are we really doing enough to help Indian brands dominate GLOBALLY?? (after all going global is considered very sexy these days isn't it?)...

Thoughts/brick backs invited...

The interbrand list I am referring to can be found here..:

Source Unknown....US Economy recent facts

Posted on Sep 24, 2008 under GyanEX

Got it via email and felt compelled to share it with all...
I dont like pasting the stuff from an unknown source (or a forwarded email), but this is way too much...have a look and comments welcome

----------------

Now, let us see the facts today:

$ 512 Billions – Already written off by banks and brokers
$ 59 Billions – Given to Bear Stearns and JP Morgan combine
$ 200 Billions – given recently to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
$ 85 Billions – given to AIG as capital
$ 2,400 Billions – Needed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mae
$ 1,300 Billions – Needed by AIG for future provisions
$ 700 Billions – Requested by Paulson – Bernanke for immediate need for Buying Bad debts
$ 400 Billions – Requested by Paulson – Bernanke for funding Money Market Fund Brokers
$ 5,656 Billions – TOTAL
$ 600 Billions – Losses of Lehman Brothers not yet written off
$ 6,156 Billions – Updated Total

Even if you ignore the future obligations of AIG and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mae, the amount comes to staggering 2,456 Billions or 2.4 Trillions or Rs 11,052,000 Crores in Indian rupee. My calculated forecasts were extremely accurate.

Failure of Morgan Stanley – Goldman Sac and making them Banks”

Looks good news - both MS and GS have become banks. And why did they become banks overnight? Because their take over by Wachovia, Chinese Banks etc broke down. No one wanted to buy MS or GS, and they would have become bankrupt this week. By giving them status of bank, their status changed overnight. They know nothing about commercial banking. The license to become a bank, which usually takes over 6 months, was given in 24 hours. Mr. Paulson is now portrayed as “savior of America ”

Where was Paulson only 10 days back when Lehman Brothers and Merrill failed?

Cunning Paulson is from Goldman Sac. He was the President and obviously has lot of stock holding in that firm, directly or indirectly. He did not want competitors to Goldman, so he allowed the demise of Bear Stearns, then Lehman Brothers and then crucified Merrill Lynch by forcing them to merge with Bank of America.

Now that field was clear, he permitted MS and GS to become banks. He destroyed the whole economic fabrics of United States of America . He knows that most of the bad assets have ZERO value, and yet he portrays that the value is still 80% (only 20% loss – if that was so, any one can afford). Against this valuation, he wants FED to pay 65% (discount of 35%) to all holders of Bad Debts, prominent of whom are Goldman Sac, Morgan Stanley (to lesser extent) and other banks. He is going to write the check for $ 700 Billions with no questions asked. So he will buy those trash assets and dump them into FED Trash House. He will save the Goldman Sac, destroy all other brokers, and he will be the most powerful KUBER in the world with power to print as much as $ 1.3 trillions of dollars in just under 3 months and distribute them to anyone he likes.

President Bush is a man with retarded intelligence. He is exhorting Congress to approve the package to buy trash assets, whereas almost all local governments of 50 odd states are clamoring for $ 200 billions collectively, which is denied to them. He spent $ 500 billions in Iraq and murdered 1 million Iraqis in addition to killing over 5000 Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan , and now he wants Congress to approve $ 1.3 trillions in less than 7 days. The Americans blindly support their leaders – they are Intelligent Idiots. They have no idea what their leaders are doing and how their and future generations lives are destroyed.

Bernanke has become a Gate keeper for Paulson. He opens the gate to the treasury to the person nominated or permitted by Paulson. He also signs and delivers the tons of dollars to anyone coming to him with Warehouse Delivery Order duly signed by Paulson. These three musketeers – Bush, Bernanke and Paulson have virtually gone berserk. They are the most powerful people in the world today with virtually no accountability. Democracy in America is ruined by them.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California and very sincere worker, is refusing to travel out of capital even for a campaign; unless his budget, deficient for a few billions, is passed by the Democrats dominated Congress. He has virtually imprisoned himself to ensure that his state does not suffer. He is not getting $ for his genuine needs. Various state/Municipalitie s are borrowing from the market @ 10% to 20% whereas FED rate is just 2%

Bangalore MS meet

Posted on Sep 19, 2008 under General

Hi All

For those who don't know, we had a small Bangalore MS meet wherein Debs, UbeU, Monoo and Paulose had come...

Just wanted to give a big vote of thanks to everybody who made it, everybody who couldnt make it and everybody who never knew any meet of this kind was planned.

It was not pre-planned and all the credit goes to Monoo for making 'some calls' and getting it all arranged. Debs was kind enough to give some time although she had to come all the way from Jayanagar at night and same applies to UbeU.....Paulose, inspite of a 'marriage engagement' (whats that!!) could make it....Truly overwhelming!

Special thanks to all those who sent their wishes via SMS to all of us

And a special vote of thanks to faisal - your SMS made Monoo and Debs jump in happiness...we are all kids afterall isnt it!!

Peace

DOG BiTe

Posted on Sep 16, 2008 under General

I thought I would never paste any stuff which isnt mine....but then I came across this lovely piece today...what the heck! let me share it....its called - Lessons learnt from a Dog bite!!

---------

It was about a quarter past 5 this morning, and I was on my usual morning walk. On the road between the T-houses and staff quarters I suddenly felt someone holding my left leg back with a pair of pincers stuck in the calf muscle. Surprised I turned around to find a black dog, which had by then let go of my leg. I shooed the animal away. It readily obliged. As the bite was somewhat tentative, and there was no blood coming out, I just washed the leg thoroughly and continued my walk.

A few minutes later the same dog appeared right in front of me. There was no time to pick up anything to frighten it with. I tired to shoo it away. But this time it didn't oblige. It started barking and snarling, unwilling to back down. With my heart full of fear (5.20 am, not a soul in sight!) I decided to use the only weapon I could think of. I bent down a bit and started barking at the dog about as loudly as the dog. With my hands I tried to make the dog feel that I was going to pounce on it. It worked! The dog backed down without showing enough doggedness in the face of the unexpected response. With courage regained, I picked up a small stone and threw it in the direction of the retreating dog to let it know that it had better not meddle with me.

Wiser, I started walking with a stone in one hand and a twig in the other. The dog came a third time when I got back to the same place about ten minutes later, but the twig in my hand probably scared it away. (I reported the matter to the security guard, and came away. Since then I have learned that the same black dog bit three more people later this morning. Along with them I also took an anti-rabies shot - just in case.)

Here are the lessons I learned:

1. A twig in hand is better than ten in the bush.

2. Not all dogs follow standard operating procedures. Some may not sound the bugle before an encounter

3. Dogs are no respecters of bald heads.

4. A bark is a bark irrespective of its source. And dogs respect it.

Here are the lessons the dog learned:

1. Barking men may bite. Avoid them.

2. Don't give men a second chance.

Peace.
