Justice League is finally out and here's my review for DC's newest film.
Director: Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon
Cast: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa and more.
A quick summary: An enemy is coming and the heroes need to team up to defend the world. Batman and Wonder woman are recruiting people with special abilities to fight the evil Steppenwolf. Let's get on with the review.
Justice League is a much different film than it's predecessors. WB is definitely trying to make their movies a bit more fun and not dull and dark like Batman v Superman was and I think this film is a step in the right direction. The tone is light hearted which was missing from earlier movies except wonder woman obviously. I really enjoyed Justice League and I like the change in tone from dull and serious to a little more fun.
Ben Affleck was once again perfect as the batman and Gal gadot as Wonder woman is just so badass. The newcomers were also very entertaining with Ezra Miller's Flash stealing the show with a fun performance. Most of the film's jokes and gags came from the Flash which made him the most delightful characters of the bunch. He was a bit like Tom Holland's Spiderman from Civil War since even he was the youngest member and with the least experience. Cyborg was surprisingly good and Ray fisher gives a good performance as cyborg in his first big screen debut. I wish he got a little more fighting to do instead of just touching stuff and hacking them and whatnot. Jason Momoa as Aquaman was pretty cool. He looked badass but also had some amusing moments. For me the star of the film would be Superman. I myself am not a big fan of Superman and I hated that he was so sad and dull in the previous movies which is so unlike the character but Justice League made me love him. Henry Cavill does an exceptional job and gives us the Superman we've all been waiting for. Superman had some of the best and most epic scenes from the movie.
The fight scenes were appreciable with some really impressive moments. The CGI for the most part is great but not always. Henry Cavill's CGI upper lip which was to hide his moustache which he couldn't shave off because he needed it for his role in the upcoming Mission Impossible 6 was noticeable but its not a big deal as that was probably done at the last minute after Joss Whedon did reshoots.
Justice League is certainly not without flaws and its biggest one would be a terrible villain. Steppenwolf had no personality with the typical world conquering evil plan we have seen a million times. There's a saying that Your story is only as good as its antagonist and Steppenwolf was a very weak villain with cliche motivations. He was basically a big CGI person and that's pretty much what he was. Marvel and now DC both have a villain problem but Marvel seems to be improving with the likes of the vulture and Ego and DC needs to do the same. Of the handful of bad guys the DCEU has given us only Zod was compelling. Apart from him every other villain from Lex Luthor, doomsday and Ares all have been very disappointing.
The addition of jokes was a welcome inclusion but not all of them were funny. Many jokes failed to make me laugh.
Also the movie felt a bit rushed and I thought the character introductions for Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg were a little brief. The original Zack Snyder cut was supposed to be longer but the released version is only 2 hours longs and I think an extended cut would solve this problem. We'll just have to wait for that.
All things considered I had a good time with Justice League and I would recommend it. My only gripe with it would be a forgettable villain and a few other minor issues. Justice League is a servicable movie though a little forgattable.
Verdict: Justice League is a step in the right direction and I have hope for a greater DCEU to come. I give Justice League a 3/5 stars.
