After watching the first animated version of How to Train Your Dragon in 2010, I was excited to see how it would translate into real life action fantasy. By the time the credits rolled, I was completely amazed and stunned. From mind-blowing visuals to great action, the movie was a complete package, full of entertainment. Directed by Dean DeBlois and starring Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler, the movie is set in the era of vikings, where dragons co-existed with humans.
The story is set on the rugged Isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been enemies for generations. Hiccup, the main character, is a young Viking who feels out of place in his village because hes not as strong or brave as the others. He dreams of being a dragon slayer, but his attempts always end in failure. One night, Hiccup manages to shoot down a Night Furythe most dangerous and elusive dragon of them allbut instead of killing it, he frees it and names it Toothless. From there, the film follows Hiccup as he befriends Toothless and learns that dragons are not the mindless monsters. The loving dragon becomes fiercely loyal to Hiccup.
It is a simple tale of bravery, friendship, and understanding. The bond between Hiccup and Toothless is heartwarming. Mason Thames does an amazing job. He brings a lot of heart and vulnerability to the role, making Hiccup feel real and relatable. Nico Parker is Astrid, Hiccups friend and love interest. She brings a lot of energy and charm to the character, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well she fit into the role. I loved their conversations. The dialogues felt natural and there was no unnecessary drama. Just pure understanding and chemistry.
The plot will feel similar if you have watched the previous animated version. The movie doesnt take many risks or add new twists to the story. Its a faithful adaptation, but it doesnt try to reinvent. Also, some characters like Astrid do not match the animated description. There is one thing I noticed that some scenes were really dark and very hard to see. I dont know what the issue with the camera was but it was frustrating. On the other hand, the casting is amazing and the humor is spot on. Visuals and music are the soul of this movie and the creators have nailed it.
All in all, it is a great film to watch with your kids. The theme of friendship, trust, and loyalty is very heartwarming and theres a lot to learn. Also, with such good visuals, the movie becomes a fun experience. There is no huge climax to the story, but the entire plot is about the characters more than the climax. If youre a fan of the original, youll love seeing your favorite characters and moments on the big screen again!
