With due respect to all the jury members who chose this book for the bookers prize, it is surprisingly below average book in every sense.
I picked up this book after a friend of mine recommended
it. I regret spending money on it.
The Author pens a very very grim picture of India but do we really need it? Whatever areas he had touched upon, be it poverty, "slavery", corruption etc have already been done to death in so mnay books and articles and even newspaper. We see India bashing on every Channel every day. So do we really need this book which is not even an interesting read?
Why is it, I ask, that we take pride in presenting a bad picture of our country? Why is it that most of the time negative portrayal wins accolades?
True, that we lack behind many countries like China as mentioned in this.
True, that the corrupt babus have eaten this place raw
True, that there is Darkness.
WHY? and What are we doing to come out of all this? Write a book that gives such a bad picture of India that if I were a firang and read it I wont come here.
The book is sloppy, no doubt about it. The author may have gone through such experiences as to "inspire" him to write about them but it is about time we stop doing this.
I was really disappointed and it actually saadened me to know that this book is a prize winner.
Dont read this book i would say to those who havent.( and if you an iota of feeling for India. you must coz after all she gives so much) and if you really must then make sure not to read more than two pages a day. That will keep you from irk .
