I purchased the Whirlpool White Magic T 50 Aqua washing machine through a corporate offer thinking that I was getting a good deal.

The problem started right with the delivery. I received a rude call from the Whirlpool transport guy detailing that the washing machine was on the way but there will be no one to unload it and that I should summon three hefty laborers from my neighborhood and position them properly for making the would be delivery a grand success.

At this sporting event I was informed that since I had gotten a discount when I entered into the deal, accordingly only one guy had been sent for the delivery to save Whirlpool?s precious bucks.

The transporter arrived after a long time when after making my team of laborers wait in the hot sun I had finally dismissed them. On seeing me alone he got the ''Lift-Your-Own-Washing-Machine'' idea which I don?t think was inspired by Whirlpool?s slogan ?You and Whirlpool make better homemakers?. Thus he inspired me and my youthful and resourceful family with his abuse to do a good workout of dragging the 75 kgs over two floors, thus saving us our daily trip to the gym.

After this homely event and finally with the 75 kgs resting peacefully in my house on the second floor, I thought of forgetting the issue knowing that these attributes were of transporters as a tribe rather than of Whirlpool itself. Alas!

The demo and installation guy was a total farce. When he arrived after two days, his only purpose seemed to be obtaining my signature on a sheet swaying ?Work completed to satisfaction?, and selling over-priced accessories such as a base trolley and cleaning solutions. However, what really shocked me that he wasn?t even trained in the basics of installing a washing machine. Having luckily read the manual I could point out to him that the transit bars securing the insides of the machine have to be removed before it can be used.

Discovering new words of the dictionary seemed to be his hobby, since he goggled like a fish on hearing the words ?transit bars? as if for the first time of his career. Anyway, overcoming his incredulousness of their existence he finally removed them with flair, and finally sat down gleefully on discovering that the tap adapter had not been shipped with the machine, concluding that he will have to return since ''my dealers had done an incomplete delivery'' (boy, ask me about that delivery, ask me!).

After these pleasant events I started concocting far-fetched conspiracy theories concerning transporters and installers, and contemplating the deep rooted evil that is attached with the delivery of every appliance of Whirlpool.

Hopefully this is the end of my troubles with homemaking - after all once a homemaker is securely installed it _should_ do a thorough job as advertised - yet a tinge of doubt lingers as an aftermath... :-)

On a more serious note, it would be pleasant if the ?Raj Jain, Managing Director? who signed the note in the product manual congratulating me on my sound purchase of a Whirlpool appliance would take note of the following points:

  1. Whirlpool appliances may be intrinsically good, but the company loses face in front of the customer by delivering such an unprofessional front end to start with.

  2. The product trainers should ensure that only trained personnel are sent on field and each person should carry a spares kit for common problems faced during installation.

  3. The manual should give a list of items supplied with the appliance, how are consumers supposed to know what things are supposed to be present with the delivery?

  4. Try to match the expectations of a customer from a ?projected? professional company by reducing such unprofessional incidents.

I will post further stuff on the features of the machine after I finish rebooting from the above installation crashes :-) !!

And my fellow corporate aspirants and to avoid being would-be sufferers, demand some things on the following fronts:

  1. Never pay 100 % amount upfront. Keep some payment on hold and hand it over only after the appliance is delivered, installed and demonstrated.

  2. Do not sign on the installation guy's service request unless fully satisfied.

  3. If first option is not an open discussion, give a post-dated cheque.
