It is a well known fact that Stephen Spielberg draws inspiration from real life stories and good books to create splendid movies. Add one more to such a list, but a small exception that this one
is not splendid. War of the worlds is yet another alien Vs Human movie, adapted from a book by H.G.Wells. The movie being the master moviemaker’s, creates lot of expectations.

The movie starts with a narration that forms a prelude for the movie. This could have been simply avoided, since the name of the movie says all that is about to come on screen. From then on the expected story line begins. The aliens rise from underneath the earth and start destroying the city. Tom cruise plays the role of a common man who saves himself along with his son and daughter. This forms rest of the story.

Usually, the protagonist is the person who will aid in destroying all the aliens and save the earth. Here, he just saves himself and his daughter. That is just a small deviation, except that there is nothing much new in the story. Tom cruise does the usual running he does in every other movie, and a small deviation here too, he also swims in addition to running. The movie gives no scope to showcase acting and happens to be an out and out action-oriented movie. The young girl who plays the daughter of Tom Cruise does a reasonable job though.

Nevertheless, the movie scores a 10/10 for its graphics and other technical aspects. Though we have seen hundreds of such movies, this one would still make us sit-up for its effects. There are scenes where the earth breaks and gobbles up buildings and cars. Such scenes are real treat to watch. The movie is not short of action too. Every second there is something happening in the movie, and of course there is that graphical treat.

The director forgets that there is something called logic which has to be in the movie. The movie is never short of logical fallacies. When an airplane crashes and there is nothing more than debris in a diameter of nearly a kilometer, there cannot be a car that remains sturdy (leave out sturdiness, there is not even a scratch on the car!). War of the worlds is also a clear example that a book is much better when it comes to revealing details and not everything can be shown on a movie. There seems to be so many sub-plots that are left alone abruptly. There are few characters that come in and you never know who they are or where they are from. Probably, reading the book first might be of help (or let us interview Spielberg at least to understand them!).

Clearly, War of the worlds falls way short of Spielberg’s standards. Being a huge fan of Spielberg, this movie disappoints and leaves a scar. Even if I remove Spielberg image off the movie, it still doesn’t impress me. Munich’s reviews rate the movie highly and looks like Spielberg is back on track. Hope that keeps up the standards set by this director himself.
