Cons:
Weak script

Lot of hype with big names like Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg and story based on the novel written by H. G. Wells failed to live upto expectations of cinema goers.

The original work by H.G. Wells
created a storm when a radio station broadcasted a play based on novel. People assumed that Martians attacked the earth and they came out of their houses.

H.G. Wells wrote the novel in 1898 and the story is set in early twentieth century. Spielberg adapted the story to suit modern time but apart from special effects movie has nothing much to offer.

As a director Spielberg is been one of my favorites but I think the way story is narrated leaves audience guessing that how really those tripods are destroyed. Yes the commentary in the end clarifies that the bacterial infection leads to the destruction of aliens but visually it is no where shown and the reasoning behind why it happened is not fully explained.

Few scenes were brilliantly shot, I liked the shot where Tom Cruise and his son are practicing catching ball and arguing. Defiantly son doesn’t like his father and then move out of the way of a fast throw which breaks the window glass of Cruise’s house. First shot is from Cruise’s side looking at broken window and then camera goes inside the house and shows Cruise face from that broken window. I think this was one scene in movie which was brilliant without even special effects.

There are many scenes in the movie which bring out technical capabilities of movie makers these days. Scenes of stormy sky, aliens coming out of the ground, cracking of church building, shaking of ground everything were amazing.

With so many good things why movie fails to capture audience hearts, good point and I think amidst of all the running characters not able to connect with audience fully. Dakota Fanning acted very well in her role of Tom’s daughter but Tom himself didn’t get a chance to act a lot but he got a chance to run a lot. Tussle with Tim Robbins gave only opportunity to him to bring out some emotions and expressions on the screen but there Tim takes the cake. Other than this movie leaves questions answered, why that red weed was growing everywhere? Why aliens need human blood? Why the protective shield fails around those alien tripods? I think script could have been better.

In the end movie might get nominated and may win Oscar for special effects but no more than that.
