The story seems to be quite trivial and had been told several times in myriad fashions before – The lazy, sagging, and spoiled brat Vs matured, determined, result oriented and pragmatic girl.
Farhan Akhtar presented their story through Lakshya before. Here the story is told in a dispassionate passion with bare minimum and essential quantity of sentiments.
The idler
Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) is the one who leads a care free life by virtue of the fortunes earned by his dad. So, he is privileged to “spent the money of dad”. His life was centered on friends, night life and his camera. To have a companion is any activity is what took his life forward. He had his own friend’s circle from where he got everything he wanted – companionship, affection etc.. But when all of them cleared the final exams he was left alone as a loser who was not able to complete graduation. That was the wakeup call for him! But again ---- someone who was always enjoying the tepid comfort in a fissure will definitely react. His discomfort with Mom who never had any formal education (Supriya Pathak), Dad (Anupam Kher) who was self made successful business tycoon became grave reached almost touched the acme and he decided to leave home.
The Independent Girl
Ayesha (Konkona) the wannabe writer reached Mumbai from Kolkata and found her first friend in Sid. Probably, it she who always approached Sid for help and the idler was having an idea about his worth through the simple gestures he can offer to her – Like joining her for birthday party, helping her to find a home etc. Finally when Sid decided to leave home, he approached her for an abode. Along with the abode, he expected everything which he was privileged to have till the last day – Security, pampering, food!
The tryst between the idler and the pragmatic / ambitious girl is all about the plot of the movie. Going further, the movie explore the how the feeling of being independent get satiated, significance of relations in life, identity crisis, career aspirations, choosing the life partner Vs matching of interests etc.
Young director Ayen Mukerji (might have left “h” in the surname to please the number gods) is sensitive and sensible enough to come up with some poignant moments with balanced dialogues and twists. Might be the USP of the movie is that he had exhibited the sensibility to keep everything in a low profile – without any dramatic twists and turns (The Imtiaz Ali way) that require lots of courage while making a Bollywood movie. At times, he did it at the expense of coming up with quite a predictable plot.
My pick of songs are Wake up Sid (with the catchy guitar score of Shankar Ehsaan Loy), Kya Karoon and Iktara (Composed by Amit Trivedi).
Casting Inshort, it is a simple story told in a straight manner without frills. Brilliant performance of Konkona andRanbir also adds charm to the movie. Supriya Pathak and Anupam Kher as Sids parents delivered the performance as expected from the seasoned and tenured actors. Rahul Khanna proved to be the specialist in handlig the role of the guy romancing the heros hearthrob in his own fashion. (Remember Love Kabbadi, Love Aaj Kal). Namit Das, Shikha Talsania etc. as Sids college mates seems to be apt choice! Nice to see fresh faces in celluloid. Kashmira Shah also came up with pleasent surprise. The introduction scene alarmed me on she being typecasted as the frustrated horny lady but with a limited screen presence, he character is entertaining. I am apprehensive on the commercial success of the movie as it might not fit into the normal spicy bollywood flick. One major drawback of the movie from the commercial point of view could be the over emphasis of cerebral appeal neglecting the gut feeling.
To sumup I can definitely comeup with a long list of the personnel behind camera, editing, background score etc. But serioiusly, there is nothing much to mention apart from the fact that everyone did their job.
Ofcourse a decent start from a new director. 2.5 stars out of 5
