WWE Wrestling was really, really big in India by 1998 when wrestlers like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Mankind were fighting each other in the squared circle to win the affection and loyalty of
their fans. This period has been officially listed as the "Attitude Era" because of the attitude-filled and testosterone-filled storylines present. WWE (known as WWF then) had finally realised that Hulk Hogan was not ageless and Shawn Michaels was not enough to draw in the crouds anymore. Thus, new icons like The Rock and Triple H were formulated and Kane and Big Show came to the WWE. As a nine year old, I enjoyed the WWE  matches immensely and loved the sheer physical limits that the wrestlers reached.

But then Star Sports, in a moment of sheer lunacy, decided to stop the broadcast of WWF and they lost thousands of viewers who were outraged by this decision. Only the dedicated amongst us kept track of the happenings via the official website, www.wwe.com.

In 2002, Ten Sports brought back WWF(now WWE) to TV sets all around India. Again, the phenomenal response to WWE was there and fans simply LOVED it. With new icons like Brock Lesnar and old stalwarts  like Triple H, WWE was headed in the right direction. But after a while, the audiences realised that the old charm just wasn’t there. The story lines were predictable and the special effects were beginning to show cracks. For example, it was becoming increasingly clear thet the steel chair wasn’t really that damaging and that the punches and kicks were hurled in such a way so as to inflict minimum damage.

In 2006 however, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has realised that he nheeds to pull up his socks and come up with better storylines. Yes, to a certain extent he has succeeded. The part where Mark Henry came back to SmackDown! was great and also how Edge became WWE Champion was awesome.

WWE ON TV
On TV, WWE has two weekly shows called Raw and  Smackdown! which have their own separate superstars and divas. Also, there is a monthly special event in a pay-per-view format. The most famous PPV (Pay-per-view) is Wrestlemania while the Royal Rumble follows in second place.
