Well, we are living in an era where a technological boom is taking place. Everybody is buzzing around with so many innovative technologies in every field we come across. And refrigerators are no exception. Door cooling technology, pentacool fridge, quick chill and many more. But I thought, why not go back down memory lane and look into a refrigerator that served me for the past 10 years. Yes, Indeed I am speaking about “The Voltas Refrigerator”, a 165 litre fridge, that brought many a cheers in our family.

Looking back, 10 years ago, owning a good enough fridge was a big thing. Amidst all these, when my uncle got us the Voltas refrigerator, I was really thrilled. So was our family. I somehow still have that sentimental feeling about the fridge. Let us look into the refrigerator's features and much more.

At that time, Voltas Refrigerator was designed to international standards and was truly ahead of others. The external build of the fridge was superior and 100% insulation was provided. A special polyurethane injected between the outer cabinet and liners ensure better insulation and hence reduces compressor running time. This in turn eliminates breeding space for cockroaches and insects. The interior of the fridge is spacious and elegantly designed. The crisper box, bottle shelves and dairy compartment are made of strong, transparent Styrene Acrylo Nitrile. The Roll Bond Freezer ensures quick ice formation. Also the special powder painting ensures that the refrigerator won’t corrode or peel and no wonder our fridge looked new even when we sold it in seconds last year. So I am totally impressed as far as designing is concerned.

Let us now move into the interiors and see what the fridge has to offer. Firstly we have the oldish Freezer box which is basically meant for ice-creams, frozen food, fresh meat and poultry. Although the later two never made way into our fridge, we used to have a lot of ice-creams always kept in the freezer compartment. If one is storing chocolates and other stuffy items, all one has to do is wrap it in a polythene bag and Voltas would take care of the rest.

The next notable tray is the “Chill Tray”. This is the place where we used to store packetted milk. What I liked most out here was the quickness in chilling. More so, the problem of milk-ice formation, never occurred as the fridge had a perfect thermostat.

The Cabinet shelves follow next. Normally we used to store curds, cooked food, kheers, those yummy pickles, doughs and all those side dishes that my mom used to make. What was more important was the adjustable nature of the shelves and its ability to accommodate vessels of different sizes. The shelves are detachable and there is a total of 7 grooves along which you can adjust as per one’s requirements. Also, there is a special partition in one of the shelf plates, felicitating place for cool drink bottles and other pickle jars that are longer than usual.

Then comes the door shelves. The door shelves are divided into 3 parts. The dairy compartment is one of them in which all the dairy items like cheese, butter and milk powder can be stored. Of course, you can as well keep chocolates out here and no wonder, this was my favourite shelf. Second came the removable egg trays. A total of 8 eggs can be stored at a time and yet there would be space for other tiny items. Thirdly, the bottle shelf takes stage. here, all the bottled items like soft-drink bottles, milk and other things can be kept. What we usually used to store was Squash bottles and I remember Gold Spot very avidly.

Last but not least is the Crisper box. This is a relatively bigger box in which fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, melons and pineapple and all the juice stuff can be stored. What we used to do was, wrap the vegetable in plastic covers and neatly store it. So the vegetables used to stay fresh and juicy as ever.

Well, what is the one thing that impressed you most? If this is your question, then I would say, there was not a thing you couldn’t accommodate. The refrigerators these days though have excellent cooling effect are crumbled of space. But in case of Voltas, there was so much space. Look, we used to store a week’s vegetables, curds, pickles, food stuff, cold-drinks, squash bottle, dough and milk packets. Forget the freezer box. Even after loading the fridge with so many stuffs, there was still some space left. These goes to show the extra advantage the fridge had in terms of space.

The ice-making in Voltas was all the more simple and more so, removing the ice cubes were also easy. Though this was nothing compared to the present day refrigerators, it was a big thing those days. The fridge was equipped with an automatic defrosting system with a unique two-stage defrost water collection arrangement. The defrosting process was also simple. Just the push of the “red button”(that is how I used to call it) located at the centre of the thermostat would start the defrosting process automatically.

Maintaining the refrigerator was never a problem. What was important was regular cleaning. The hassle free nature of our refrigerator can be majorly credited to the regular cleaning my mom used to do. Daily defrosting also played an important part in the maintenance of our refrigerator.

But in this new age of technological marvel, there are so many fridges coming out with latest high-end technology. While this refrigerator is in the lower end of the spectrum, there are so many new refrigerators in the higher end. So it is hard for me to pursue someone to buy this fridge by this review. But I am the happiest person in the whole world at this point of time for expressing my views on Voltas 165 litre refrigerator which served me good.
