Flew business class on a newish Boeing about a year ago from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.
The airport in HCMC was not very nice borderline disgusting as some parent allowed their child to take a dump around the Vietnam Airlines ticket area. But they soon cleaned that off and made it much better to deal with our waitlisted flight.
After all that was resolved, the boarding procedure was ok and inflight, we were offered ok food and great service...my friends were in economy and they said service and food was ok there.
Flight attendants were very nice and chatty and offered some advice on things to do in Hanoi. The airline offers an int'l standard of service. I have flown several national airlines in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, etc and was quite pleased with Vietnam Airlines' level of quality.
Flight was ontime but a little crowded...but I imagine this is quite a popular route.
One caveat, they code share flights from HKG with Cathay Pacific and, of course, CX is a better airline so do try to get on CX planes for that route...
Anyway, they are a good airline and seem to be on a good road. I would definitely fly with them again.
