I flew form Gatwick to Bangkok with Vietnam Airlines in June 2012, with a stop over each way in Hanoi. I found the flight absolutely fine, apart from the on board entertainment. On the way out the sound was not working but you could still watch some movies. On the way back nothing appeared to work.
However, both me and my friend were very tired, so we slept the majority of both routes, so this didn't bother us too much. The staff were very friendly and the on board food was really nice! On the way out there as it was a day flight, they fed us about 5 times.
With unlimited sandwiches and noodles, whenever you asked for them. I would fly with Vietnam Airlines again as long as I do not have a 9 hour stop over in Hanoi again, but thats to do with the flight details rather than the flight quality.
