Vernon little's existential angst which manifests itself all too conspicuously in almost every page of this slang infested and colorful language spangled book is just too reminiscent of Holden Caulfield's universal gloom, but that does not detract anything from the very skillful way DBC has done away with all verbal niceties not least in an exceptionally angry and smart boy ,ergo impatient with fools and only too trigger happy to blast every unfavorable event as a fup. Vernon is the perfect literary representation of people who just cannot brook arrant stupidity. Vernon faces stupidity disgustingly resplendent with the finest possible jewels of inanity, a brilliantly dumb and almost cranky to boot mother who's most of the times more concerned with what neighbors think about her clothes and mannerisms than her son’s fragilely hanging fed up life. Then is the character of a reasonably shrewd media man who takes full advantage of the asininity of Vernon’s heart wrenchingly moronic mother. In fact all thru the book, one Vernon attitude that reverberates itself almost constantly, is that, propriety and genteel mannerisms per se on a stand alone basis sk if they do not bend in extenuating and offbeat circumstances. This ubiquitous leitmotif keeps reinventing itself whenever Vernon is pinned against crazy and impossibly dumb opinions and options, the respective holders and givers of which ironically purport to be the touchstones of wisdom!! Its these conventional hallmarks of wisdom and propriety that have no regard for common sense and ground realities and are so steeped in fed up Ivy league and Bovine cerebral colours that DBC smashes left n right ala that other great icon of amazingly intelligent and sum times funny but potentially inexhaustible anger, Eminem.
