Vernon God Little Review

I decided to read this book only after I bought it for a friend of mine, for his birthday. When I began reading it...I just couldn’t stop.

When you start reading the book it seems to read a lot like J.D Salinger's 'Catcher in the Rye'. The perspective was from the protagonist himself-Vernon Little- so throughout the book you see his situation through his eyes, ears, and nose... everything. The book seems to begin in confusion and due to this for a while you don’t quite know what the trouble is. It's not till a later in the book that you find out what is actually going on with Vernon and the strange Texan town he lives in. Vernon himself is very much a character anyone can identify with, though the situation he is put in is not a very common one. His mother, her friends, the towns people and so on all have very comically portrayed characters and it is great fun getting to know them as you read the book. What pushes you to read the book is this boy, Vernon, what happened to him? Why is he thrust in this very nerve-racking situation? Where will the life of this boy go?

DBC Pierre I feel has a very comic and attractive style of writing. Even from the first page itself I was pulled into the world of Vernon God Little. The characters and situations created by the author really make you laugh hysterically, even though the tone of the book is a little more sordid. When you read and think about the situation Vernon is placed in you feel complete pity for him, yet he seems to find a way to make it seem so much lighter then you think it is, and you just end up laughing it off.

Though it may not be a thriller, there is a lot of mystery to it, carrying you further and further into the book and it is only towards the end that the threads that have been woven to create this story really come together to make a truly mind-blowing and twisted masterpiece.
