I visited this place with my mom's Office colleagues about 5 years ago. Its was a one day tour to visit vedanthagal, Mahabalipuram, lions cave and come back.
The Sanctuary is big and actually has a lake/pond with lots of trees in the water. So u can see the birds everywhere inside. When I visited I only could see a lots of migrating swans. But it is said that u could see a wide range of birds over there during season. Since I had limited time on the tour I only could see and enjoy about only 2 to 4 different types of birds. Most birds can be seen on water and on trees and many other on the flight.
I enjoyed with my camera at that place taking a lots of photos. There are towers built in there for taking photographs.
Pros -
1) The Sanctuary has tower for photography.
2) Has parking place outside.
3) Eatable available out the sanctuary.
4) walk-able place well built and maintained.
5) very less entry Fees.
Cons -
1) the whole place is very smelly.(well most of the zoo do smell bad). I almost vomited becoz of this uneasiness. The pond is very dirty too!
2) No Seating place available inside. We cant Relax.
An Tips to tourists - Dont visit this place in the summer. U wont be able to enjoy a lot. Between Sept and Feb is the best time to visit.
Overall, a one time visitable place in Chennai. But if u like birds and bird photography, this is the best place to visit during seasons.
The Alternate place is "Pulicat Lake".
