Hi All,
My name is MV Sri Nagesh. I am 43 year old. I am a very active person and cannot sit idle. I spend about 12 hours working in the office and another 3-4 hours outside office. I regularily do
Yoga, play table tennis (for 1 to 1-1/2 hours), pranayam, suryanamaskarams etc., 6 years back I suffered from acute cervical spondilosis. I underwent traction with steroid treatment. after that no pain was there in the neck and am alright. It all started some 4 years back that i felt pain in both of my hips will walking and burning sensation while doing my work. At the same time i was also having pain in the back. So i underwent so many tests, xrays, MRI for back. Then the Ortho told me that there is no problem with the back and gave me some pain killers asking me to take them for one week. My problem was getting aggravated and attending office had become a big problem. heavy gait along with instability while standing was increasing. Time was passing by and it was year 2006 and month February. Finally one of my relative, an Ortho surgeon has asked me to undergo MRI scan of both the hips. After analyzing he told me that I had to undergo sugery for hip replacement as the ball and socket were badly damaged.
I consulted my friends and family members for their view. Some scared me and some encouraged me. But, I have to have lot of courage before going in for the surgery. I underwent Total Hip Replacement on the left hip and Artificial Surface arthoplasty on the right side. During the surgery on left side I was given Spinal Epidural Anesthesia. During the surgery my heart beat and my blood pressure were as normal as per text book. I dont have nay medical problems related to Hypertension or Diabites. I was able to hear to the conversation of the OP staff and the surgeon. I asked the surgeon to show me the removed Femur head . I said I wanted to preserve it. They didnt no agree. The sugery took around 2 hrs and was under observation for around 6 hrs. Later I was shifted to my room. Later after one week I underwent ASR for right Hip. This time I was given complete anestesia as when they were trying to give the Spinal Eipidural Anestesia, I felt that my head and my both hand were becoming numb. The pain becuase of this in the head continued for 6 months after the surgery. After this I was shifted to my room. From 10th day, the Physio started attending me and i started responding very fast. after 18 days, the padding and all accessories were removed. I came back to my house after 20 days. From then I hired a Physio and very meticulously I followed his tips and advices.
This period of 2-1/2 month after I came back to home was very crucial. What I would like to prospective HIP Joint Replacement patients is that have a high degree of courage and will power to get back as normal as ever before.
I would like to advice others that dont get panicky. The surgery is only 50%. To make it success the rest of the 50% depends on YOU. Meticular Physio Exercises with Proper diet will make you to feel that you never had any problem. You may even wonder that You had undergone a hip replacement.
For six months be very careful during walkin on the tiled floors, bathrooms, climbing stairs. Dont try to give jerky movements. Dont try to run.
Now I am back to my Table Tennis. I can sit cross legged. I jog. Unless and until I tell someone that I had undergone Hip Replacement no one knows.
I wish the people who are readin this should shed their fears about Hip Replacement
