After reading tons of trilogies, I thought of giving a chance to standalone novels.so I finally picked up uprooted written by Naomi Novik, which came out earlier this year.
This novel follows our main female character Agnieszka who lives in a small village which is very close to the woods and in this fantasy world these woods are very ominous with lots of magic in them and a lot of bad things happens to people who get too close to it or go into the woods. At times, some terrifying creatures come out of the woods so in order to keep them at bay a wizard is stationed near the woods and every 10 years, this wizard who is known as dragon goes down to the nearby villages and he picks up a girl to be her housekeeper at the tower where he live in for next 10 years. Everyone in the village was expecting that wizard will pick Kasia but when the time comes he end up picking Agnieszka to be his housekeeper.
The world that Naomi Novik has built is very interesting and it also feels slightly nostalgic because the woods have been used in the fantasy novels for years and I felt that the writer take on it is a really interesting one. The plot gets a bit confusing in the end of the novel, but overall it is a very well done and in a way it is unique that I have never seen before.
The plot is great it moves quickly and at times I felt that more happen in this single novel than some complete trilogy I have read and it did in a way that the pacing is not effected.
I loved this novel and will highly recommend it to any fantasy lover.
