Four friends team up to form UNGLI gang to fight injustice and corruption in their own unique style. We have seen plenty of them in the past and here’s another attempt to inspire you.

Abhay(Randeep Hooda) a crime reporter, Maya(Kangana Ranaut) an intern at a hospital, Kalim(Angad Bedi) a mechanic and Goti(Neil Bhoopalam) a Computer Engineer are the best of friends and also with Maya’s brother Ricky(Arunoday Singh), a fitness freak body builder.  Ricky tries to resolve a road rage street fight but is attacked by the son of a powerful Police mafia.  He then lies in coma in the hospital and while the case is in the court, the witness who he fought for turns hostile refusing to identify the culprit since he and his granddaughter were threatened of dire consequences.  Seeing the culprit go scot free and bitter with the reality that it is impossible for a common man to fight justice ethically and win, they take upon themselves to teach a lesson to all those engaging in corrupt and unjust practices.  Aware of the fact that law and order is only for the common man while the rich and powerful circumvent it, they decide to expose the corrupt through media.

ACP Kale(Sanjay Dutt) is the honest police personnel assigned with the task to nab the Ungli Gang who have by now gained public liking. Nikhil(Emraan Hashmi) – a police officer in the bomb disposal squad, is the son of another honest cop who died on duty and who was ACP Kale’s best friend. Though Nikhil tries to walk in his father’s shoes, he is unable to connect honesty with the corrupt system that he works in, thus he feels as a misfit in the police force.  Nikhil is made the undercover cop by ACP Kale to investigate on the Ungli Gang.  Posing as a Ungli Gang member, Nikhil pulls out couple of famous stunts against the corrupt through media in an attempt to catch Ungli Gang’s attention and become part of their gang. He is successful in his objective but then is convinced by the intent and mission of the Ungli Gang which he later adopts.

Meanwhile, ACP Kale is informed that his transfer is imminent and if he desires to be relocated to the most coveted area of Mumbai, he will have to cough up Rs.5 lacs as initial installment and later Rs.45-50lacs spread over the years.  It turns out that the Fixer of this deal is B.R. Dayal(Mahesh Manjrekar) who is the father of the culprit who had attacked Ricky and was acquitted by the court.  ACP Kale and the Ungli Gang now have a common enemy and a shared goal.

Though corruption is prevalent in almost all Government Departments, the movie mainly targets the police force. The movie has a social message but it is not effectively screen played.

With high caliber of the cast, there is nothing that can go wrong in the acting department but overall the performance is quite ordinary and does not leave any impact. The direction is satisfactory but the plot is shallow and predictable. The movie had enough scope for improvement and could have been made better and impactful.

The songs are mediocre and choreography suited Emraan Hashmi’s dancing style which is akin to mere physical training exercise steps.  Any other stars thrown in as special appearance do not add any value. Neha Dhupia who plays ‘Teesta’, a TV journalist does have a significant role as Abhay’s colleague.

Although the intent of the movie was good, it does not come about convincing enough.

Though a big banner ‘Dharma Production’ product, ‘Ungli’ is not a must watch but could be recommended as a one-time watch. Not the type that will inspire you to watch all over again.
