Pros:
Great Acting by Ajay and Kajol, Touching Storyline
Cons:
Songs, Other Characters a bit Unnecessary, Plot Sometimes Over The Top

At last, after a few attempts, we have a good Ajay-Kajol film again. I still have nightmares of Raju Chacha in my head… but enough of

that, U, Me aur Hum is one very touching, heart-warming and indeed, at times, a heart-breaking story of a couple. Sounds simple? Well, after you see the movie, you would believe that simplicity is all it needs.

As seen in the promos, the initial story takes place on a cruise liner, with an elderly Ajay and Kajol. Kajol seems not to know Ajay, as she is suffering from Alzimers. Ajay then relates to her their story, not revealing the characters at first, and hoping that each day; she would be able to remember their life at the end of it. And that’s where the majority of the movie takes place, in this story rendering.

Ajay first meets Kajol (really sorry but I do not remember the characters names, saw the movie 3 weeks ago) on a cruise liner where she serves as a waitress. He initially tries to woo here, but she is unimpressed. He later sneaks into her cabin and learns out about her. When he realises that here interests do not match his, he still takes the effort to adapt them for her. She gets impressed with this and romantic sparks being to fly… later on finding out what he really did to get there, she gets upset… only to return to him at his home. A lesson she says, even though he broke her trust by looking at her secret diary, he still made the effort to like her interests, and she appreciated that.

They get married and have a happy life… until one day when he comes back to find her on the middle of the road, she had forgotten where she was. A test reveals that she is suffering from Alzimers, and this is where the heart-breaking, second half of the movie starts, and where, the movie truly gets into its stride.

Ajay does not know what to do. As a Doctor himself, he always used to recommend to relatives of Alzimer patients to move them to a care centre, but realises that he cannot do that to his own wife, since he loves her too much. He does not tell here about this, and keeps her in the house. They have a baby, and that makes her condition worse (without her knowledge). Ajay’s pain at having to endure her condition silently without telling her reveals a real depth in his acting, the pain etched on his face is genuine. Kajol, on the other hand, as a patient of Alzimers’ during her fits, plays the role well, but not as well as Amitabh Bachchan did in Black, in my opinion. But at least, in this movie, Ajay’s performance is a real heart-breaker… indeed; I found it difficult to hold back my tears at times. A really good movie for a couple to watch.

Kajol’s illness makes it impossible to keep in the house, as she once leaves her child in the bathtub and forgets about him, almost resulting in his death. It is then that the difficult decision is made to move her to the rehab centre. At the centre, while admitting her, she sees the wife of one of his patients, to whom he earlier recommended not sending her husband to the centre. That is a poignant movement when he realizes the trouble and pain a patients loved one has to go though.

His wife’s absence really hurts him, and this pain makes his friends around him realize how important relationships are and the effort required to keep them afloat. I did not mention the other characters here, because frankly, the Devgans performance dominates the movie.

In the end, Ajay takes his wife away from the centre and vows to always be with her. It is then that the movie moves to the present, with Ajay mentioning that the couple vowed to spend their 25th Anniversary abroad a cruise liner. It is then that Kajol acknowledges him and says that she remembers that day… and that they indeed are spending their 25th anniversary on a cruise liner… thus bringing an end to the movie.

The movie does not try to show a miracle cure even at the end, but end on a pleasant note… a happy one, of Kajol remembering her life on that day after Ajay narrates the story.

The only weak points of the movie I can think of are the songs… not really ones you would care to listen for on the radio, unlike those from Jab We Met… but that is a small flaw in an otherwise emotionally charged (in many ways) movie.
