A marvellous singer

Sonu Nigam is certainly the best thing to happen in the Hindi Music Scenario in the past decade. Initially labeled as a Mohd. Rafi clone, Sonu came out of it soon and carved out his own niche with his versatility and an enviable range. The following Sonu Nigam songs are my favourites . These are the songs, which, I feel have done full justice to Sonu’s colossal talent.

  1. Yeh Dil Deewana(Film:- Pardes, Music Directors:- Nadeem Shravan) - This song catapulted Sonu to the big league. Excellent rendition by him with a superb composition by the ‘melody kings’ .

  2. Mujhe Raat Din(Film:- Sangharsh, Music Directors:- Jatin-Lalit) - Although the song has an uncanny resemblance to an old Mohd. Rafi song, the composition is breezy and ear friendly. But, it is Sonu’s expressive vocals which takes this song a few notches above the ordinary.

  3. Aate Jaate Jo(Film:- Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega, Music Director:- Anu Malik) - It is a soft romantic song which is composed in the 1970’s style. Sonu as usual does a superb job with a good support by Alka Yagnik.

  4. Meri Zindagi Mein(Film: - Armaan, Music Directors:- Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) -

The way Sonu has sung this number gives you an impression that it is some other singer, such is the versatility of this great vocalist that he improvised his voice for this soft number. Good rendition by Sunidhi too.

  1. Aisa Lagta Hai(Film:- Refugee, Music Director:- Anu Malik) - It is a   wonderful experience listening to this song in a lazy, quite evening with your loved ones. Sonu’s vocals are just perfect for this semi-classical number.

  2. Deewana main hoon(Album:- Deewana):- The whole album is an absolute favourite, but Sonu is especially superb in this song especially when his voice reaches the high pitch.

  3. Kal Ho Na Ho(Film:- Kal Ho Na Ho, Music:- Shankar- Ehsaan – Loy):- Clearly, a perfect song - superb music, soul- stirring lyrics, and of course a lovely singing by Sonu. He is at his best in this song about life and its many shades.

  4. Ae Chaand Teri(Film:- Tera  Jadoo Chal Gaya, Music Director:- Ismail Darbar)- What a song! This song gives me Goosebumps every time I listen to it. An absolute underrated gem.

  5. Khamoshiyan(Film:- 1 2 Ka Four, Music Director:- A. R. Rehman) - What a bad film, but what a wonderful song! Lataji and Sonu Nigam complemented each other perfectly and the result was sheer magic!

  6. Saathiya(Film:- Saathiya, Music Director:- A.R. Rehman) - Needless to say this song is one of the best in the past five years. And, Sonu Nigam’s expressive vocals have added the necessary luster to the song.

  7. Rama Rama(Film:- Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega, Music:- Vishal Bhardwaj) -  It’s a peppy number which is enjoyable mainly because of Sonu and Asha’s superb expressions and great camaraderie between them.

  8. Ishq hai kya(Film:- Hum Ho Gaye Aapke, Music:- Nadeem Shravan)- Love me love me just for the day! Inane lyrics, but nevertheless a foot tapping number which has gone unnoticed largely because of the film’s dismal show at the box office.

  9. Bijuriya(album:- Mausam) - Another chartbusting song by Sonu Nigam. It’s a folksy kind of number and he does full justice to it. The picturization was quite innovative as well.

  10. Dhalne lagi hai raat(Film:- Inteha, Music:- Anu Malik) - I know many of you wouldn’t have heard this song but it’s an absolutely wonderful song .Good music, decent lyrics and an extraordinary rendition by Sonu Nigam.

  11. Chak de chak de(Film:- Hum tum, Music:- Jatin Lalit) - It’s a copied song, nevertheless the reason why it gets a mention here is the backgrounfd arrangements and Sonu and Sadhna Sargam’s fine vocals.

  12. Yaar Mangyasi(Film:- Kaante, Music:- Anand Raaj Anand) - This sad Punjabi number from this action flick deeply moves me whenever I listen to it.

  13. Bahut door jane ko(Film:- Dand Nayak, Music:- Rajesh Roshan) - It’s a very rare song by Sonu and a female singer. I happened to listen to it at a close friend’s place. It’s in the lines of “ghar se nikalte hi” and is thoroughly enjoyable.

  14. O ri sajni(Film:- Doli Saja ke Rakhna, Music:- A.R. Rehman) - The other songs in this flop film were fairly popular except this one, it’s truly a magnificient number, Sadhna Sargam as the female voice was pretty good but it was Sonu’s voice which gives it an extra sheen.

  15. Pyaar se pyare(Film:- Deewangee, Music:- Ismail Darbar) and 20. Ek din kahin(Film:- Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, Music:- Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) -

Both these songs are truly masterpieces and are very close to my heart.

So, these are my 20 songs of the great singer. I have not followed any ranking or anything of that sort here because I feel all of them are great in their own right!
