This is my contribution for the Panchamda Festival organized by me. Pancham Da sang in unique style which can be termed a Grunting Bass Style. It is said that he has given weak music in some movies like Sunny, Manzil Manzil(both were Sunny Deol starrer), Zabardast and Zamane ko dikhana hain. I completely disagree with this statement as the songs were very remarkable songs and to this day are my favourite . It was extremely tough for me to choose 20 songs from the 53 that were shortlisted by me. I am not repeating songs(Aandhi, Masoom etc) which I have used in my earlier reviews and I have used a lot of songs composed by the Burmans. Take note of the judicious use of instruments in all the songs listed below.
Aaj kal paanv zamin

jab bhi thaama hain tera haath to dekha hain -2
log kahte hain ke bas haath ki rekha hain
hamne dekha hain do taqdiron ko judte huae
This song starts with the notes of guitar gradually accompanied by other instruments. The song melds beautifully with the music. The above lines have so much of depth in them, joining of two hands is not only physical but destined to join for eternity.
Dil ne kaha chupke se

kyon naye lag rahen hain yeh dharti gagan
maine poochha to boli yeh pagali pawan
pyaar hua chupke se, yeh kya hua chupke se
New love changes a person’s outlook, s/he feels newness in everything around her/him. One cannot hear the Love’s soft treads yet no wonder a person in love can be identified quickly.
Do lafzon ki hain

do lafzon ki hain, dil ki kahani
ya hain mohabbat, ya hain jawaani
Love is universal language which can be understood by everyone who has gone through or has seen this emotion around them. The Italian prelude though not understood by me is very soulful. I always love hearing this song.
Sapna mera tuut gaya
Khel Khel Mein ~ R D Burman/Asha Bhonsle ~ Gulshan Bawra
aaja meri baahon mein aa
pyaar bhari raahon mein aa
sun le machalte huae dil ki sada re dil ki sada
There is flashback in this song. I like the part sung by Panchamda the best. It is very tough to lose a loved one and the yearning for him will dim but never end.
Yeh vaada raha

The orchestra starts prior to the song, you got to hear the whole song for the beautiful whistling as well as for the words. The loved ones want to meld with each other like two waves.
tujhe main jahan ki nazar se chura loon
kahin dil ke kone main tujhko bitha doon
So sweet a loved one wants to hide her/his partner from the eyes of the world as if wanting to keep them safe from the evil eyes.
Zindagi Ke Safar Main

kuchh log joh safar mein bichhad jaate hain
woh hazaron ke aane se milte nahin
umr bhar chahe koi pukaara kare unka naam
woh phir nahin aate, woh phir nahin aate
This is a philosophical song. The importance of one person who gets lost in the way will not diminish even if thousand people come into our life. Those who go away never come back, the sad and bitter truth of life.

The colour of true love is too fast to get washed away. This is a beautiful number sang by a little known singer Chanchal who has an unusual voice and a strong classical base.

Yamma yamma, yamma yamma, yeh khubsurat sama
bas aaj ki raat hain zindagi , kal hum kahan tum kahan
This song famous song from the flop movie Shaan achieved a cult status too. I changed this song as I had mistakenly included a song composed by another Composer.
Sach mere yaar hain

jis haath mein ik haath hain
uss haath ki kya baat hain
kya manzilen, kya faasle
ik humasafar gar saath hain
This is another movie which I have seen only once but love all the songs. Kamal Haasan is shown singing this brilliant song and he has done full justice to it. I feel that if Rishi Kapoor was shown singing this song he might have not carried it well. I know many of you might not agree with this statement of mine.

Who wants to let go the beautiful season loved by the lovers, hmm maybe stop the cycle of change and let everything come to a standstill.

kisne dekha kal, arre kisne dekha kal
Rightly said that today is in your power, who has seen tomorrow, so live today to the fullest. There is a contrast song samaj to jaldi chal too in the movie.
Pehla pehla pyaar na bhoole

pehla pehla pyaar na bhoole
bhoole chaahe saari khudaayi
This song is ironical, the lady singing this to her husband oblivious to the fact that her husband is unable to forget his first love.
khud ko khokar tum ko paaya
haar ke jeete jeet ke haare
One finds another only by losing oneself but that is not a loss, it is the permanent bigger gain after a minor loss. Salma Agha has outdone herself with this song. I am happy she did away with her nasal twang while singing this song.
Koi paradesi aaya
Hamse Hain Zamana ~ Anwar ~ Anand Bakshi
ham sab musafir, duniya safar hain
iss raste mein, kis ko khabar hain
kaun kahaan mil jaaye, kis bhes mein
Yet another song with philosophical inclination. Our life is a journey , one never knows who will cross our paths. I always mourn the loss of Anwar to drugs, he remains one of my fav singer.
