My Top 20 favourite Lata Mangeshkar songs
Jul 21, 2008 06:30 PM 37864 Views

It is hard for me to just pick 20 of my favourite Lata songs, with her beautiful voice she makes any song a classic. I will do my best to just pick 20 of her solo songs.

  1. Mausam Hai Aashiqana – Pakeezah(1972) A beautiful romantic song which evokes images of nature. It combines the longing the heroine has for her beloved with her surroundings. The lyrics of this song are captivating, they certainly don’t have lyrics like this any more.

  2. Naina barse rhim jhim – *Who Koun thi(1964) A haunting and beautiful song. Lata’s voice has so much longing in it making you really feel the pain of the heroine as she remembers the days she spent with her love. Again, the lyrics of this song leave you in awe of how amazing they are….oh mere humraahi phirtee hoon ghabraai jahan bhi hai aaja mere paas.

3.  Honthon mein aisi baat – Jewel Thief(1967) Fabulous upbeat song which hides a secret. Vyjantimala dances magnificently as Lata’s singing leaves us feeling how there is indeed something risky in what she’s singing. *Baat jisme pyar toh hai, zeher bhi hai. *One of Lata’s more tantalising songs.

  1.  Dikhaye diye yun – Bazaar(1982) Lata’s voice sounds gorgeous in this enchanting song. Lata’s soulful singing and the poetry make this a classic.

  2. Lag ja gale – Who Koun Thi(1964) A sweet and sad romantic song beautifully sung by Lata. It shows what are perhaps the last moments the lovers will spend together.  The lyrics are divine…Hum ko mile hai aaj yeh ghariyaan naseeb se jee bhar ke dekh lee jiye hum ko kareeb se. Phir aap ke naseeb mein yeh baath ho na ho shaaid phir ees janam mem mulaaqat ho na ho.

  3. Chand Phir Nikla -  *Paying Guest(1957) This is what you call a real golden oldie. Lata shows the sorrow and loss in her voice in a moving way that you cannot help but be touched by this song as she sings for her love who she waits for and the moon comes out but he never does come.

  4. Jalta hai badan – Razia Sultan(1983) A very sensuous song going deep into the feelings of desire. Lata’s voice shows how she is very much in longing for someone to extinguish her thirst and fire of her body. Actually quite a provocative song, showing how Lata is not just great at singing romantic or sorrowful songs.

  5. Rasik Balma – Chori Chori(1956) A truly heartbreaking song, showing the agony of a woman who fell in love, only to be left broken-hearted. Lata’s voice expressed this heartbreak so well and the lyrics are pitiful.Jab yaad aayi tihaari surath woh pyaare pyaare nehaa lagaa ke haree.

  6. Aayega aane waala – Mahal(1949) This haunting, classic song is the one that got Lata discovered. She sings this evocative song so beautifully that it lingers in your mind long after.

  7. Milo na tum toh hum gabraaiy* – Heer Ranjha(1970)  A lively, delightful song showing the foolishness of love as the heroine sings how she longs to meet her beloved but is also shy when he does come before her. A song that really does make you smile.

  8. Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai – Guide(1965) A very joyous and inspiring song sang with such feelings by Lata Mangeshkar. It gives you hope that although in the past she may have suffered now is the time where she does feel like living again and breaking away from everything that tied her down before. It really is a delightful song!

  9. Baaharon mera jeevan bhi saavaron – Aakhri Khat(1966)Just pure and simply beautiful. It evokes so many feelings of new love, new beginnings and how she longs to begin this new life.

  10. Haai haai ye majboori – *Roti kapra aur makaan(1974) This song moves away from Lata’s usual soulful and romantic songs as it has more of teasing quality to it. Also who can forget Zeenat Amaan dancing away in the rain!

  11. Chalte Chalte – Pakeezah(1972) This is one of Lata’s most classic songs about meeting a stranger, adding to the mystery and wonderment of the song. Lata’s voice is as usual exceptional.

  12. Pyar Kiya toh darna kya *– Mughle Azam(1960) From the epic film Mughle Azam, it is indeed another one of Lata’s most classic songs fighting against the notion that love is wrong and something to be afraid of. The image of Madhubala dancing gracefully will forever be fondly remembered with this song.

  13. Dil toh hai dil - Mukaadar ka sikandar(1978) I really love this song, another of Lata’s vibrant, romantic songs.

  14. Ab toh hai tumse har khushi aapni – Abhimaan(1973)  A cheerful and blissful song showing how now she is owing the happiness of her life to her lover. She doesn’t care about anyone and what they say, just about him.

  15. Hum the jinke sahaare – Safar(1970) An emotional song about how the one who she was always with could not be hers.

  16. Ajeeb daastan hai yeDil Apna Aur Preet Parai(1960) A pleasant song to listen to yet Lata has managed to also underline this song with sadness with the versatility of her voice.

  17. Baahon mein chale aao – Anamika(1973) A lovely song.

What do you think of my list?

I probably have missed out some of my other favourites….but can’t include them all!
