Bollywood has several great philosophical songs to its credit. Today I am sharing a handful out of them according to my choice. Naturally it's a subjective one as everybody can make his / her own list consisting of his / her favourites.

I have not included some great songs like Mann Re Tu Kahe Na Dheer Dhare (Chitralekha - 1964), Ruk Jaana Nahin Tu Kahin Haar Ke (Imtihaan - 1974), Jo Raah Chuni Tune Usi Par Chalte Jaana Re (Tapasya - 1976), Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhaata Chala Gya (Hum Dono - 1961) and Kahaan Ja Raha Hai Tu Aye Jaane Wale (Seema - 1955) in this list because I have already covered them in my review of twenty best Hindi songs.

  1. Sansar Ki Har Shay Ka Itna Hi Fasana Hai (Dhund - 1973) : This song, sung by Mahendra Kapoor is actually a Ghazal authored by Raja Mehndi Ali Khan and composed by Ravi. It's my numero uno philosophical song since I believe in what it says - Ek Dhund Se Aana Hai, Ek Dhund Mein Jaana Hai (everything in this world emerges out of a fog and dissolves again into a fog).

  2. Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahaan Nahin Milta (Ahista Ahista - 1981) : It's an immortal Ghazal declaring the great philosophy that none gets everything in this world, some deficiency is bound to remain in everybody's life. The Ghazal of Nida Fazli has been composed by Khayyam and sung separately by Asha and Bhupinder. It's picturized on Nanda.

  3. Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli Haay, Kabhi Ye Hansaye Kabhi Ye Rulaye (Anand - 1970) : Manna Dey's immortal song composed by Salil Choudhary and penned by Yogesh. Picturized on Rajesh Khanna.

  4. Zindagi Ke Safar Mein Guzar Jaate Hain Jo Mukaam Woh Phir Nahin Aate (Aapki Kasam - 1974) : Kishore Kumar's immortal song picturized on Rajesh Khanna. Pancham Da (R.D. Burman) has composed the lyric of Anand Bakshi.

  5. Chhod De Saari Duniya Kisi Ke Liye (Saraswatichandra - 1968) : Lata's great song, penned by Indeevar, composed by Kalyanji Anandji and picturized on Nutan (singing for Manish).

  6. Sukh Ke Sab Saathi Dukh Mein Na Koi (Gopi - 1970) : A memorable philosophical cum devotional song for both Rafi and Dilip Kumar. Kalyanji Anandji have composed the music of Rajender Krishan. The philosophy is perfect that you have all the companions in your happy times and none is with you in your bad ones.

  7. Tora Mann Darpan Kehlaaye (Kaajal - 1965) : A great devotional cum philosophical song of Asha, picturized on Meena Kumari. Your heart is the mirror of your good and bad deeds. So true. Sahir's excellent lyric has been composed by Ravi.

  8. Kasmen Vaade Pyar Wafa Sab Baatein Hain Baaton Ka Kya (Upkaar - 1967) : My favourite song sung by Manna Dey and picturized on Pran. Qamar Jalaalabaadi's lyric has been composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

  9. Phir Jaao Kashi Phir Jaao Kaaba, Pehle Padosi Ko Pyar Karo Baba (Patthar Se Takkar - 1980) : Great philosophy of life that before going on pilgrimage, first learn to love your neighbour. Mukesh has sung it for Sanjeev Kumar whereas Laxmikant Pyarelal have composed the lyric of Indeevar.

  10. Jab Ek Kaza Se Guzro To Ek Aur Kaza Mil Jaati Hai (Devta - 1978) : An excellent philosophical song declaring the harsh reality of life. Rafi sings for Sanjeev Kumar the lyric of Gulzar composed by R.D. Burman.

  11. Zindagi Ka Safar, Hai Ye Kaisa Safar, Koi Samjha Nahin Koi Jaana Nahin (Safar - 1970) : Kishore Kumar's memorable song picturized on Rajesh Khanna. Indeevar's lyric has been composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

  12. Gagan Ye Samjhe Chaand Sukhi Hai, Chanda Kahe Sitaare (Saawan Ko Aane Do - 1979) : In this world everybody feels himself / herself more aggrieved than others, declares this beautiful song penned by Madan Bharti, composed by Rajkamal, sung by Jaspal Singh and picturized on Arun Govil.

  13. Raahi Manwa Dukh Ki Chinta Kyun Sataati Hai, Dukh To Apna Saathi Hai (Dosti - 1964) : An unforgettable classic song of Rafi, penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Picturized on the blind hero - Sudhir Kumar.

  14. Kahaan Tak Ye Mann Ko Andhere Chhalenge (Baaton Baaton Mein - 1979) : An underrated song of Kishore Da which is very close to my heart. Picturized on Amol Palekar. Rajesh Roshan has brilliantly composed the beautiful lyric of Yogesh, having high literary value.

  15. Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe Ho Nisar (Anari - 1959) : An immortal song from the team of Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Raj Kapoor. Great philosophy of life indeed.

  16. Sansar Hai Ek Nadiya, Sukh Dukh Do Kinare Hain (Raftaar - 1975) : An all time great philosophical song penned by Varma Malik and composed by Sonik Omi. Sung separately by Mukesh and Asha and picturized on Madan Puri and Moushumi Chatterjee.

  17. Chal Akela Chal Akela Chal Akela (Sambandh - 1969) : An unforgettable song of Mukesh, picturized on Dev Mukherjee. The immortal lyric has been penned by Pradeep and composed by O.P. Nayyar.

  18. Na Munh Chhupa Ke Jiyo Aur Na Sar Jhuka Ke Jiyo (Hamraaz - 1967) : A very popular inspiring song of Mahendra Kapoor, picturized on Sunil Dutt, penned by Sahir and composed by Ravi.

  19. Kehta Hai Joker Saara Zamaana (Mera Naam Joker - 1970) : A great philosophical song from Raj Kapoor's ambitious movie. Sung by Mukesh and picturized upon Raj Kapoor himself. Shankar-Jaikishan have composed the admirable lyric of Neeraj.

  20. Zamaane Mein Sabhi Ko Milte Hain Gham Tum Na Ghabrana (Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar - 2001) : An underrated excellent song sung by Hariharan which infuses optimism in the listeners. Dabbu Malik has composed the lyric of Faaiz Anwar. Jimmi Shergill sings it for Amisha Patel in the movie.

Other than these top twenty, I like the following philosophical songs also very much :

  1. Kismet Ke Khel Nirale Mere Bhaiya (Ek Phool Do Maali - 1969) : Music director Ravi himself has sung this song penned by Prem Dhawan which has been picturized on Balraj Saahni in the beginning of the movie.

  2. Jeena Yahaan Marna Yahaan (Mera Naam Joker - 1970) : A timeless classic which is the result of the team-work of Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Raj Kapoor.

  3. Aye Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo (Mera Naam Joker - 1970) : A great philosophical song from the same movie, prepared by the same lyricist-music directors, picturized on the same actor. The only change is that it has been sung by Manna Dey.

  4. Mile Na Phool To Kaanto Se Dosti Kar Li (Anokhi Raat - 1968) : A beautiful Ghazal penned by Indeevar, composed by Roshan , sung by Rafi and picturized on Pareekshit Saahni.

Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai, Ye Jo Mann Ki Seema Rekha Hai, Mann Todne Lagta Hai (Rajnigandha - 1974) : An excellent philosophical song for which Mukesh won the national singer award for the best playback singer. Yogesh's highly meaningful lyric has been composed by Salil Chaudhary and it's been picturized on Dinesh Thakur.
