My parents who live in Mumbai have just taken delivery of the new Toyota Corolla Altis a few days back. I've had the chance to drive it a couple of times since, and can whole-heartedly recommend the car to everyone. For ease of reading, I'll summarize in points:

1) It's a new model just released in Sep/08. From a practical view, that means its resale value should hold up well over the next 4-5 years. From a user's view, the car has been thoroughly updated both on the interior and exterior. The exterior is very smooth with lovely clean lines. The styling is similar to that of the Camry. Comparing to the Honda Civic(the obvious rival), I'd say that the Civic probably has a more cutting edge design; however, I personally really like the "baby Camry" design of the Altis as well.

2) The Altis has a 1.8L engine. I found the engine to be really powerful with excellent suspension and responsive brakes. My dad and I had both test-driven the Civic about 6 months back, and our comment at that time was that since the Civic is built low to the ground, the ride feels a bit rougher than you would expect. By contrast, the Altis is higher built and that makes for a smoother ride. It really soaks up the bumps well, essential on Mumbai's roads! Turning and parking is easy and the engine is really quiet.

3) Where Toyota scores is the Altis's interiors. Very comfortable and well designed with plenty of leg room both in the front and back. 8-way adjustable driver seats and lots of useful compartments throughout the car to stow reading glasses, magazines, drink bottles, etc. One tip - my parents bought the 1.8 G manual transmission model which comes with standard fabric seats. I would recommend spending an additional Rs. 30K on the optional extra of leather seats. They are made of high quality soft leather and are very easy to keep clean, much nicer than the fabric seats. The AC system is super-effective and a 6-CD changer comes standard, perfect for long drives or short drives made longer by sitting in traffic! The boot is very large and can comfortably accommodate at least 3 large suitcases and a couple of handbags, so no problem there. Loads of additional accessories come standard with the base model, so I don't think there's need to go for the more expensive models unless you really need automatic gears, etc.

4) Fuel efficiency has been very good so far with 10 kms/litre in city traffic. Have not tested it on the highways, but I understand it would give 14-15 kms/litre.

Lastly, I must thank the people at Shinrai Toyota at Worli, Mumbai who were very professional and made the car buying process very easy and hassle free for my parents. They also gave them a very good deal on the car with a considerable discount off the asking price plus additional optional accessories. With the economy in recession, if you are looking to buy a car, now is the time as dealers all over the country are likely to give you a good deal, based on my family's experience.

Overall, I would say this is a super buy, very comfortable and reliable car with an excellent reputation and zero-to-low maintenance. It's equally comfortable if you are driving it yourself or are being driven. The only thing I didn't like is that there is a fairly limited choice of colours(only 5 so far). It's perfect for city driving and should last you a long time. Although it's a bit on the expensive side, I feel it's well worth the money given the features included and Toyota's excellent reputation.
