10 pairs of Hindi cinema…. Topic itself looks quite attractive. How can I resist giving my esteemed (??) judgment on this one? J So without much ado, lets directly jump into the pairs and lets start being the “haddis” in the kabbab. I have arranged the pairs in the order of “greatness” as I perceive them. Of course, person to person, there will be difference of opinion.

Raj – Nargis

Probably the most memorable pair of Hindi Cinema, until their surprise separation. They have done a lot of great movies together, that started with Aag and went on to Andaaz, Barsaat, Awaaraa, Shri 420, Chori Chori etc. till Jaagte Raho, where Nargis was seen with Raj Kapoor for the last time (in a guest appearance). There are several rumors on the on screen as well as off screen romance of this pair, but keeping that out also, there is hardly any pair that comes close to this.

Dev Anand - Waheeda

The pair that epitomized romance on black and white screen. Their glamour on the black and white screen has been unmatched. Their movies were full of emotion, soft romanticism and very good music. The famous ones include CID, Kalabazaar, Solva Saal, Roop ki Raani Choron ka Raaja, Guide and Prem Pujari, the last two being in color.

Amitabh – Rekha

The pair that was always covered with controversy, drama and gossips. No one knows what is the truth and no one will probably ever acknowledge. But this pair of Ganga ki Saugandh, Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Silsila etc. The pair will be probably best remembered for “Shalaam-e-ishque” in Muqaddar ka Sikander.

Shahrukh – Kajal

When I think of the great pairs of our times, then this name comes to me first. Unlike the older era, in the modern times, we do not have too many actors/ actresses who do a lot of movies together. But this pair was different. They have a long journey from Baazigar to Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham. Their memorable hits include Karan Arjun, Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge etc. among others. Each of these has been a big crowd puller.

Gurudutt – Waheeda

Not all lovestories end in happiness. Such was their story. Gurudutt had discovered Waheeda and their on screen chemistry was awesome in the few limited movies that they worked together. From CID to Kagaz ke Phool, the worked in a few master pieces like Pyasa, Sahib Biwi aur Gulam and Chaudvin ka Chand. Nobody else has portrayed Waheeda as good as Guru Dutt.

Shammi Kapoor – Asha Parekh

This is a pair of very high entertainment value that probably symbolizes the 1960s. I remember as a child enjoying all of their movies, which were coming frequently on DD. The stories were similar, performances were sterotype, direction was okay…. but still this pair made the cinegoers’s heart The movies included Dil Deke Dekho, Jawaan Mohabbat, Tisree Manzil, Janwaar and Pagla Kahaanka. Of course, each movie had some excellent music.

Amitabh – Jaya Bhaduri

When Amitabh came to the industry, Jaya was already a star. Still she did not hesitate in working with a newcomer in films like Zanjeer and Mili. They went on to give a few more memorable movies like Chupke Chupke, Sholay, Abhimaan and probably the highlight of their career – Silsila.

Rajesh Khanna – Mumtaaz

The icon of early 1970s. Both of them were unique in their styles, whose styles were copied by every youth of that era. Their dances were unique and so were the colour combination of their clothing. The famous movies included Roti, Sachcha Jhoota, Do Raaste, Aap ki Qasam etc.

Amitabh – Rakhi

This pair is my personal favourite. Myself being a fan of emotional – romantic – tragic kind of Hindi movies, I found two very good once of this pair – Muqaddar ka Sikander and Kabhie Kabhie. Also, Kalapathhar, Barsaat ki Raat, Bemisaal, Jurmana, Trishul etc. were a few other ones. Interestingly, in two movies that I am aware of (Lawaaris and Shakti), Rakhi has played Amitabh’s mother and in Shaan, she is the bhabi.

Dharmender – Hema

Again, one more pair with good on as well as off screen chemistry. Probably, they were a made for each other couple. Dharmender being rated as one of the most handsome heroes (He Man) and Hema being termed as the Dream Girl…. Among them, they shared quite a few memorable hits loke Dream Girl, Burning Train, Pratigyaan…. And of course…. Sholay.
