“You have the Answer. Just get quiet enough to hear it. - Pat Obuchowski”

Jigsaw puzzles are interesting things- No piece can be neglected and yet all pieces can’t be used at once. But if you do it patiently, you find yourself staring at a whole, beautiful picture to your own astonishment. Isn’t it a stunning resemblance to mysteries?

About the Author: Michael Koryta: This is his first book that he wrote at the age of 21! He has written 12 books till now, some of which have been prestigious award nominees or winners. His name has sparkled on the best-selling novelists' list. His assistance to a private detective agency immensely helped his flair for crime fiction writing.

Story: Joe Pritchard and Lincoln Perry are two new private detectives who have retired from the police force and are in desperate need of a case that will lift the look of their bank accounts!

The case is boggling. Another private detective Wayne Weston has apparently committed suicide by shooting himself on his head. His wife Julie and 6 year old daughter are missing since the night of the murder. Wayne’s father hands over the case of investigating the actual happenings of that fateful night to the detective duo.

The victim’s father believes that comrades of the same profession as his son would better understand the case and edge towards solving it at a faster speed than the FBI. Initially, they seem to be making no progress at all. There are hordes of people who would have wanted Weston killed! It turns out that Weston was working for a real estate player who was a multimillionaire. Weston was working as a blackmailing agent to force property owners off their land. He was reduced to an extortionist. One the other hand, he was also into gambling.

The mystery of his family’s disappearance also appears to be moving nowhere towards the solution till the detectives find the little girl’s diary where a childish handwriting says – Tonight I said Goodbye.

Did Wayne Weston commit suicide? Was his gambling impulse out of limits leading to his death? Did any of the countless landowners he blackmailed decide to lash back? Were the family kidnapped by any of his numerous enemies?

Quotes from the book:

• Perry: What did it feel like while flying the glider? John Weston: It was like sitting on the front porch and flying the house.

• We got a photo of the family members. Julie had a smile so bright and genuine it made me want to look away from the picture.

• His voice was lower now gravely and grinding; like a pencil sharpener too full of shavings.

• She'd probably paid 50 bucks for the haircut, but I could have given her the same look with the weed whacker.

• Hell of a day. I was thanked for my co-operation by one of the city's deadliest criminals and cursed by a prosecutor.

My Opinion: The main characters are so strong, one would expect to find them next door. The story is written from Lincoln Perry’s point of view which was immensely gratifying to me as a reader. It was as though I was very much on the run with them from pillars to posts and from casual golf clubs to threatening mafia dens in search of clues and in search of the truth.

It was interesting to see the little confidence of the duo in the initial days of the case surging to a passion in the second half of the book that makes the big shots feel threatened.

The case that starts off as an apparent suicide moves to the different seas of extortion, blackmail, underworld, gambling as well as a bit of love. Unbelievably, it is speckled with humour as well. To sum it up, it was a dish with a plethora of different spices.

It was not a book I kept reading without putting down for the first half. The numerous characters(each one was a suspect) introduced in the beginning where the detectives stumbled and learnt from mistakes had me confused and weary for some time. But the second half picked speed at an incredible pace and that’s the precise reason for awarding it 4 stars. The revelation after all the twists was shocking. That alone gets a half star!

This is the first book by Michael Koryta with Lincoln Perry as the detective and I will surely read more in the series after a break from mysteries. Now is the time for some Sci-fi!
