Pros:
emotional historical story
Cons:
sometimes a little cheesy

I watched Titanic on opening day in my city. I must admit, I was caught up in the Titanic hype. I couldn’t wait to catch a glimpse of diCaprio and Winslet doing the famous ’’I can fly’’
scene on the bow of the ship. Sure enough, opening scene, my breath caught in my throat and I was sucked into the movie. With my friends all sitting singly on all sides of the theatre (it was so packed, us 10 couldn’t sit together), I was alone, isolated, and truly felt that I was right there. It was probably the camera work, coasting along the air so smoothly. Maybe it was the music: light, airy flutes turn into a powerful orchestra. Brought me to misty eyes within the first few minutes. I knew the ending.

Kate Winslet, the best actress for the part as she plays historical parts well. She looked like a Rose, so believable. She is set to marry a stuffy jerk (sadly, played by the oh so charming Zane), and is sailing to America to marry him. Her hats, her dresses are authentic for the time and flattered her figure well!

Leo diCaprio plays the precocious Jack. An American who wins his tickets playing poker with his buddy, the Italian. Good luck, he thinks, but my heart sinks and I think that fate played a really cruel jest on him. His costume looks authentic for a po’ boy, but his acting seemed a little too sheepish for his role.

So Kate and Leo fall in love after an unfortunate incident involving the back of the ship, and Leo is thanked by being brought to ’’first class’’ dinner and embarrassed. Fortunately for Hollywood, pity makes a woman fall deeper, SO...The plot kind of drags from here. A lot of discussion and intrigue by the amorous couple precedes the best part of all: the sinking!

Of course, now the ship is sinking, and I am crying my eyes out. Lower class people are locked at the bottom of the ship, rich women are being lowered in life rafts that are less than half filled. An old couple is hugging each other tightly in bed while the water rises next to them (choke, sob). A baby screaming for it’s mother in a flooding hallway. A priest calming God’s people by quoting scripture. The band played on. The captain went down with the ship. Jack died so Rose could live.

This movie really isn’t about the love story, if you can see the forest through the CHEESE. The love story wasn’t even that bad, but the real story is the strength, the courage, the selfless acts, the faith showed through various characters that weren’t part of the main cast. There’s the emotion. There’s the history. That’s the reason why I sat through three hours of an ENGLISH movie (with no singsongs!!).

Once again, I warn you to watch this alone. Partly because guys don’t like it, and nobody wants to hear loud sobs and sniffles.
