Pros:
the depiction of the tragedy
Cons:
the hype

It brought me to tears...not coz I don’t have one of those eye-care TVs, but coz it was so filmi! I remember all that hype surrounding The Titanic (the movie, not the ship). Leonardo
and Winslet suddenly the new stars of Hollywood. Teenagers drooling over their charm (whatever!). My heart will go on was the new anthem of the world!! The arms-stretched-wide scene by Winslet and Leonardo became a symbol of love. Jeez! I doubt if there’s anyone who saw the movie and didn’t try doing that when on a ship (maybe I too would be tempted.. thus I’ve decided to not set foot on a ship) ;)

Okay, so let me not be a total jerk by getting all sarcastic and mean, coz I’m sure this movie figures high on the favs list of many people. So here’s what I liked...

Mystery
No, I’m not talking abt the mystery in leonardo’s eyes (so stop swooning ladies). The mystery of the ship. The titanic. Magnificent, regal.... unsinkable. Could the disaster have been averted? Was the iceberg all that did the damage? What really happened onboard that night? How did the people react... the noble, the rich, the famous? That’s what fascinated me.

Visuals
Awesome. Loads of research and simulation finally they gave us The Titanic. The final session of the movie was by far the best and was worth the torture (of the first half of the movie). The beautiful halls, rooms. The Titanic was put before us in all it’s splendour .The tilting of the titanic, the cracking up, the water gushing around.

Camera Work
Superb. It makes you feel like you’re there.

Acting
The terror. The panic. The fear. Very well acted indeed.

Love
Yea yea, I liked that too. So sue me. However I’m not talking about the romance (spare me), I’m referring to love. The honest emotion that won peoples’ hearts. Leonardo doing all he can to save his lady love. The old couple lying in bed together waiting for their deaths. The women who refused to leave their husbands behind.

The Emotions
Such a wonderful range of human emotions. Love, hatred, jealousy, honour. I loved the portrayal of the few men who played music as The Titanic plunged to it’s death. The preacher who preached the message of God to all those who were willing to listen and all those who needed the strength in such a trying time. The men who let go of chivalry and honour while trying all they could to get themselves to safety. The captain who took responsibility for the disaster. The little girl who didn’t know where her father was. These are the things that made this movie worth watching.

What I didn’t like...

Too filmi
It was way too filmi. The rich girl being forced to be with a rich man who’s actually a jerk. The rich girl poor boy love story.

Hmmmm now what else didn’t I like. O God! I guess that was all that I didn’t like. Somehow that outweighed all the good points. I’ll explain how. The movie was hyped and put forward with romance as it’s theme.
It’s a movie portraying human emotions, a whole lot of them at that. But somehow all that took a back seat.
This movie must not be considered a love story. No way. It is anything but. It kills me to say I liked the movie coz rarely have I met a Titanic fan who didn’t interpret it to be a love story. It’s a human story. It’s about love, hatred and all those shades in between.
I urge you all to look at this movie for what it is and not what it is made out to be.
This review was supposed to be a negative one... it sure started out that way.... but I realized that my hatred wasn’t really for the movie, but for the total frenzy about the love-story of the lead pair. Trust me, once you notice the other smaller, seemingly insignificant stories, you’ll realize that the real story was about people other than Leonardo and Winslet.
