The length of the movie

A big story about a big boat that held big dreams but gave up the ghost big time to sink in a big ocean. That’s what this grandscale 3-hour plus saga shouts: BIG

Whatever anyone else
says, I liked...make that loved.....this movie. And Jack and Rose were the most humdrum part of it. Leonardo might have achieved cult status with his Jack in this movie but I loved the pathos of Rose’s life.

In fact, I have seen this movie 25 times to see the elderly Rose come face-to-face with her past on the television...’’I’ll be damned!’’ she says on seeing those sketches of her that Jack had drawn.

I think I’ll bore all of you reading this with a ’short’ list of my favourite scenes/highlights from Titanic.

1. Is given above, when 80-yr old Rose sees her pics on telly.
2. All those underwater shots of the sunken ship....brrr...chilling to know that a young girl played with a doll - there’s only a hollow skull thats left in the sand.
3. Another one of my fav scenes is when young Rose’s (played by Kate Winslet) fiance Cal (Billy Zane) unveils the ’Heart of the Ocean’.......whooooohooo.......what a rock!! On a little aside, I don’t think I would refuse marriage to a man who offered me such a rock! Anyway, we all know Rose was a class by herself...(sigh).
3. When Rose tries to jump off the ship and Jack talks her out of it.
4. The ’I-sucked-a-lemon-too-hard’ expression on the face of Cal’s valet.....I believe the man’s a natural actor (the valet, not Billy Zane); he does not have to pretend probably. The same expression is shared by Rose’s mother.
5. Molly, the gregarious nouveou-rich woman who dishes out as good as she gets. This one is a good characterisation.... someone on the side of the poor, beleaguered hero, someone to look after him, help him etc.
6. The ICEBERG...the star of the movie, I believe. One shot and we are all done.
7. The lead couple running through the belly of the ship trying to escape the sour-faced valet. Those shots are ethereal, Rose’s flying gown and the flames from the coal pits and the sooty workers....magical (with the added soundtrack).
8. Ooooh....Rose trying to search for and rescue Jack from where he’s been locked up. The hatchet scene is funny and a bit poignant at the same time.
9. The moment when you realise that only 1st class passengers were allowed to get onto the boats....those down in the holds below were locked in to prevent a stampede. I was horrified the first time I saw this movie...how could they do that?? It still amazes me...class distinction when lives are at stake??
10. Anderson, the ship’s builder.....you should see his face when he realises that his ’unsinkable’ ship will not hold if 5 chambers are flooded. His sadness is palpable and you can’t help but feel bad for him. He made a mistake, so now how can he forgive himself...so you forgive him.
11. The reporter character...I forget his name. The pompous, spineless, gutless worm who jumped into a life-boat to save his skin. Rose’s voice-over after the ship sank said ’waiting.....waiting to live, waiting to die, waiting for an absolution that would never come’ (or something to that effect, forgive me if I err). I believe it was meant for this reporter person, solely, absolutely.
12. Molly at least trying to get the cowards in her boat to go and pick up some survivors. The shame on everyone’s face as they realise that they have chosen to save their own skin above that of someone they love...what love is that?
13. And finally, when Jack makes Rose promise that ’no matter what, you will go on’, live life, get married, have grandkids and die in her bed, safe and warm....’not here, not like this’. And with those words, I knew I was about to see the end of a great love story. Jack died.
14. Rose lived on, with his memory buried in her heart forever....’A woman’s heart is an ocean of secrets’ (guys, you would do well to understand this, not every one tells you everything and rightly, some things must remain unsaid). Rose did all that she promised...learnt to ride a horse, got married, lived life to the fullest.
15. Last but not the least...the message I got from this movie.
Sometimes, love happens just once in a lifetime. If you are lucky enough to have it returned, then you should do all you can to hang on to it. You never know when it might be taken from you. If it is taken from you, then you live on and live good, in the hope that someday you will see again the one you lost, in the great hereafter.

Enough preaching. End of review. Hope none of you decide to bash me for this. :) I seem to get more sappy as the days go on. Ah, put it down to approaching senility.
