Its like the showers of rain after a heat wave and sultry weather of stereotyped and monotonous shows- more correctly the women folk appealing serials. On 20th June, Zee TV’s megashow Time Bomb written-directed by film director Ketan Mehta debuted amidst lots of pomp and show. And gather attention it did, for the most deadly combination of Indian television- Rajeev ‘Sujal’ Khandelwal and Akashdeep ‘Ansh’ Sehgal made their presence felt immediately.

PLOT:

Time Bomb is an international political thriller of global terror with its epicenter in South Asia. The protagonist is Varun Awasthi, a member of a secret govt. agency called Agency to Counter Terrorism. The story revolves around one complete day that is, September 11, 2005, beginning at 12 ‘o’ clock at night. Each episode covers real timings and exactly one hour of the day. At the onstart of the story, Varun gets a tip from a CBI officer about an imminent attck on the PM Anirudh Prakash just as the great messiah of terror, Osama Bin Laden and his ruthless son Usmaan make their way to India from POK. Varun now has exactly 24 hours to identify the people involved, which begins with his search for the weapon involved, taking him through dangerous destinations.

But viewers shall discover, along with Varun in the coming episodes that the attack on the PM was only a ploy to distract the defence and security. The actual motive of the terrorists is ‘a change in world order’ by exploding nuclear devices at Washington, London, Delhi and Tel- Aviv.

Suitably embedded in the story are various other tracks- Varun coping with a breaking marriage, the political scenario and turmoil in the life of the PM, psychological terrors, patriotism and personality clashes. And all this takes place- in 24 hours.

CHARACTERS:

Varun Awasthi (Rajeev Khandelwal) : He is the Senior Field Officer at ACT RAW, a patriotic and dynamic young man who follows only his gut feeling in everything. He speaks less and is more action oriented. But his personal life is a mess and although he struggles to keep them both intact, usually ends up hurting his beloved wife.

Rajeev Khandelwal, who perfected the role of Sujal in Kahiin To hoga to a T, is excellent. His style of acting is completely different from ‘Sujal’ and he has proved that he can get into the skin of any character with ease. His rushed up acting, action, and realistic emotions are too impressive. Above all his new stern and tough look in the serial is a treat for all his female fans.

ANIRUDH PRAKASH (Kay Kay) : He is the fair minded and perfectly honest Prime Minister of the country who is in threat of an assassination. But the duty conscious person that he is, he refuses to cancel out any of his daily routine in fear of an attack. He is struggling to keep his seat intact against the No- confidence motion to be passed against him in the morning, but is not ready to take wrong means. Above all, he is in fear of his reckless and adventure seeking daughter Anu.

Kay Kay, a very talented actor, acts out the part well and looks the part too. He has acted in Ketan Mehta’s previous show ‘Pradhan Mantri’ of which Time Bomb is a sequel. His role in the serial, however is not in the limelight. This will greatly disappoint his fans.

ROMA AWASTHI (Amrita Saluja) :She is Varun’s wife and his life, and a successful News Reporter. However she has separated from him for the last one year, when she lost her unborn child, and even then Varun was away for a dangerous mission. She feels that it is his work which is separating him from his wife and 5- year old daughter. She gets a lucrative offer to move to Canada after an impending divorce.

Amrita Saluja, better known as the ‘Whirlpool’ mommy, makes her debut with this serial and is doing good work as the confident reporter, the loving mother and the frustrated wife.

OSAMA BIN LADEN (Vallabh Vyas) : Who does not know him? But in the serial he has been shown as a person in an ill state of health. He is hell bent upon making India pay the price for supporting the war against terrorism. He however honours his fellow friends and supporters. The spotlight this time is on his son Usmaan.

Vallabh Vyas, another established actor acts out wonders. But his appearance speaks otherwise, he is a bit too fat for the role, but the terrifying beard is the same.

USMAAN (Akashdeep Sehgal) : There he is, the man who does it all. He is the son of Osama and is a lot more impulsive, ruthless and reckless unlike Osama. He has a mission which has to be fulfilled by hook or crook. And for this, he is now coming to Delhi!!!!

If you liked Ansh in Kyunki, you’ll like Usmaan here, coz he is much the same as ever- fierce and wicked. The promos had some excellent scenes on him which showed him emitting piercing and heart shaking cries.

The rest of the cast are good too, having small subplots in the story. In the 16th episode, all these tracks will combine together.

MERITS:

The show is definitely different from the shows we are now used too. There are no tearjerkers, and no female protagonists (although there are strong female characters), yet the two male bombshells have created enough interest!!! The story is evident of the modern times we live in, and the complexities are decidedly urbane. Since terrorism is a global issue which keeps everyone glued, the broad way in which it has been used is appealing. The pace is exciting and the viewer is intrigued.

The characters are well sketched and very human and not out of the world. All the actors have got into the skin of their characters really well and as there are not too many rippetting dialogue deliveries like in soaps, the onscreen drama looks realistic.

The presentation perhaps has been loosely inspired by the American Show 24, but its definitely good. Since each episode covers exactly one hour, the digital clock and the split screen technology enable to see different situations of the different characters. The ticking concept gives the heart robbing feeling of the bomb, ready to blast. The camera effects are natural and ‘fast on the wall’ type. Its as if you can sense each and every movement that’s occurring.

The sets are impressive, be it the grand ACT headquarters, the somber home of the PM, the terrorist camps in POK or Roma’s modern house. Many outdoor shoots have been done in Washington, Afghanistan, Himachal etc. The situations and plots are not difficult to understand. Action is excellent, realistic again, with real explosions in some scenes.

DEMERITS:

Time Bomb is a different serial and hence not very easily acceptable to the womenfolk who are addicted to family serials. Plus it is slotted against Kahaani… and Kyunki on Star Plus. Since these are the beginning episodes, the plot will take some time to thicken. So it is important that the viewers don’t run out of patience till then.

CONCLUSION:

People are liking it, especially in big cities where it is getting success even over soaps. Rumours float that Zee has betted about 110 million on the most expensive show of Indian television. Hope that this different attempt on entertainment works out well.
