Jerome K. Jerome's Three men in a boat makes for hilarious reading. The antics of three elderly gentlemen are described laced with humour. Add a clumsy dog to the plot and it makes for comedy like never before. Read how men just have to be men, and try to prove their superiority, put each other down, and basically establish dominance. I wonder what Freud would have had to say about these three and their dog...
George, Harris and the author, referred to as J throughout the book, have just entered the 'elderly' phase but are unable to face it yet. Their comical incompetence at a variety of tasks is a riot. They can't pack, they can't cook, they can't take care of themselves, but is it any wonder for their gender? Perhaps the presence of a woman would have made the lives of these three less muddled!
This book is written in a very distinct style. Other than it's main plot, there are many side-splitting sub-plots. Overall a good read, but the author sometimes gets into more than we want to know, with tedious details. In certain parts, just when you want him to come to the point, he goes off on tangents and beats about the bush. Despite the few flaws, this is one book everyone should read!
